March 2013
FROM THE CHAIR
I hope that you have all enjoyed this term at PACC.
Our exhibition will be held just after Easter (dates below). As always we hope to see as
much work as possible on show as this is the best form of publicity we can get! We will
need help both with hanging the exhibition and with stewarding. This year we are going
to accept unframed work, these should be protected with plastic,
We still need more members to come on to the committee , the more people there are
on the committee the more the work of running the club can be spread out and with
more people hopefully we can develop new ideas.
Thank you to the majority of members who enrolled in plenty of time for this term and
who sent their form and cheque to the administrator. We will be using the same process
for enrolments for the summer term, you should get an enrolment form with this
newsletter and this should be sent, along with your payment, to the administrator by
Thursday 28th March. This allows us to know what classes still have places available, we
are already getting queries from people wishing to enrol and need to be able to let them
know if they can join a class.

JOE MURRAY 1929 – 2013
Joe hasn’t been seen about the Mill and Granary in recent years but many members will
remember him and many will be familiar with the slender, upright figure who cycled his
way around Haddington.
In the early 1990’s Visual Arts Workshop, as we were then known, had a financial crisis
but was fortunate to have a member with banking experience who was able to put
matters back in order but only on condition that a new treasurer was promptly found and
that was when Joe stepped into the breach and took over as treasurer. There was little
money in the pot when he did but he left PACC, (as we had become), in much better
financial health when he retired as treasurer in 2006. For some 13 years the club
benefitted from the stability provided by his continuance as treasurer and PACC is in his
debt though he wouldn’t have seen it that way.
Shortly after taking over as Chairman in 2005 I met a Haddingtonian who told me how Mr
Murray had been “so kind” and as her maths teacher had put off extra time and
explained fractions to her; something she had struggled with. It was clear that I gained
kudos simply from knowing “Mr Murray”!
Few maths teachers are remembered fondly but this wasn’t the only occasion when I
learned that Joe was held in considerable affection by many of his former pupils.
Dependable, a man of great probity, with a dry sense of humour that showed in the
constructions of “found” objects that he produced from time to time and that
demonstrated his interest in creative crafts. I am glad to have known him.
Cynthia Hay
And from Rita Wilson,
“Flourishing, thank God.”
Joe was treasurer when I was on the committee in the mid ‘90’s and when I was
chairman; he was a pleasure to work with. He was always helpful and cheerful and when
one asked him how he was he always replied, “Flourishing, thank God.” It was the same
when I met him from time to time about the town: I shall miss that.

FEES FOR THE SUMMER TERM 2013
The weekly cost of a standard class is just over £4.80. As you will be aware class, PACC is
a registered charity and we do not make profits. Fees cover tutor costs and overheads
such as insurance, heating, lighting and so on. Please encourage friends to come along
and try a class? Our classes are really good value for money; we have dedicated tutors,
we keep class sizes small and we occupy a wonderful building.

We regret that PACC is not able to offer concessions to those who are 60 and over. We
are a self-funding organisation and it is only thanks to the goodwill of the Lamp of Lothian
Trustees who do not charge us rent for the building, that we are able to keep fees as
reasonable as they are.
Why you need to pay before the start of term
We need to know before term starts if a class has enough PAID UP students to run.
Please note - your tutor is unable to ‘reserve’ a place for you as he/she does not process
the enrolments. You need to have paid your fees by 28th March 2013 in order to have a
place in a class for the summer term. Please help us reduce our administration by paying
promptly. To ensure your place please send a cheque (payable to ‘PACC’) with your
completed enrolment to to:
