Children’s Aid Society Purple
Ribbon Campaign – 2015
St. Lawrence Secondary School and the
Children’s Aid Society of SDG are proud to
participate in the 2015 October Child Abuse
Prevention Campaign marked by the purple
ribbon. This is an incredibly important
campaign that serves to raise awareness about
the issues of child abuse/neglect and
ultimately protect the children/youth of our
community. Last year, CAS enjoyed the
highest school participation rate in history with
61 schools wearing purple. We are asking all
staff, students and community groups to wear
purple on Friday, October 16. Wear purple
to raise awareness about child abuse and to
show our support for the children and youth of
our community. Students’ names will be
entered in a ballot for a prize draw – electronic
prize package. You can also show your
support by attending the ‘Child and Youth
Dinner of the Arts Fundraiser’ which is
scheduled for October 28 at Au Vieux Duluth in
Cornwall from 11:00 am to 8:30 pm. Follow
Children’s Aid Society of SD&G on Facebook for
more information.

Intramural School Reach
School Reach is a trivia league that runs
Wednesdays and Thursdays at lunch in Room
6. Teams consist of three
students and one teacher.
Teams go head-to-head
battling with their trivia
knowledge of science,
history, literature, popular
culture, math, and
everything in between. Intramurals run until
the spring. In the spring, four students from
grades 9-10 and four students from grades 1112 are chosen to compete against other
schools in the region. Come out to play or
come out to watch! There is still room to
register a team. See Mrs. Wilson for details.
Terry Fox Day – October 01
St. Lawrence raised over $300.00 for the
Canadian Cancer Society as staff and students
walked or ran to honour the courageous and
heroic efforts of Terry Fox. The SLSS school
community
thanks staff,
parents and
students for
supporting such
an important
cause.

Digital Literacy & Digital
Citizenship Seminars
All grade seven and eight students will
have participated in a digital literacy and a
digital citizenship seminar on either
October 6, 7, and 8 this month. The
purpose of the seminars is to educate
students about what it means to be a
digital citizen and how to be digitally
literate. Ms. Kelsey Schmitz, PHD
candidate with UofO and Queen’s
University explored with students social
media issues and the digital imprint left by
all individuals as they participate in social
media opportunities, gaming sites, and
gaming culture. The seminars are
interactive and informative for all involved.
Parent Teacher Interviews and
Meet the Teacher Night!!
On Wednesday, October 21, St. Lawrence
Secondary School will host Parent
Teacher Night from 6:00 – 8:00 pm.
Grade 9-12 preliminary reports will be sent
home with students on October 19. Parents of
our grade 9-12 students will have the chance
to discuss their children’s progress that night.
Parents of our grade 7 & 8 students can call
the school to arrange a meeting with their
child’s teacher if they wish to discuss his/her
general programming and routines for the
year. In addition, parents may discuss their
student’s progress over the first two months of
school. We hope to see a great turnout!
School Council
School Council will meet again on Monday,
November 09 at 6:30 pm in the Learning
Commons. All parents are encouraged to
attend and become an active member of the
St. Lawrence Secondary School Parent Council.
Congratulations to Ms. Sandy Banga who will
serve as our School Council Chairperson for the
2015-16 school year. As a school council
member, parents and guardians can help
your school council discover new and exciting
ways to contribute to the education of students
at St. Lawrence. Education is a partnership
involving parents, students, teachers,
principals, school boards, government, and the
community. Your involvement in the council
gives you the opportunity to strengthen that
partnership, and to be part of a dedicated
team working to ensure a high quality of
education. Your participation can make a
difference.
BE SAFE, BE SEEN, WAIT IN A
SAFE PLACE!
Delaney Bus Lines would like to remind
everyone about the importance of waiting
in a safe place for the school bus, ahead of
School Bus Safety Week, October 19-23.
For whatever reason, many students forget
that school bus safety begins before they
actually get on the school bus. Failing to
wait in a safe place could be dangerous for
a student if the driver of a school bus
cannot see them. Remember, BE SAFE,
BE SEEN, WAIT IN A SAFE PLACE!
Attendance, Punctuality and
Safe Arrival
Students must attend school daily in order to
have the best chance at being successful.
Parents or guardians, if your child is
going to be absent from school or late,
please contact the office and advise the
Attendance Secretary by 7:45 am. If we
have not heard from a parent or guardian, we
will contact the home of any student who is
not in school when the attendance is taken for
those students in grade 7 & 8. If a student is
going to be absent for more than a day it is
very important to call the school and request
that work be sent home for the student.
Personal Property
The school will not be responsible
for the loss, theft or damage to any
personal items brought to the
school. Bicycles should be locked,
while skateboards, iPods,
Smartphones, laptops, tablets and MP3 players
should be safely stored in a locker. Students
should NOT bring valuables to the gym locker
room at any time.
