The London School of Hygiene & Tropical Medicine Institute of Psychiatry, Kings College London Advertisement Lecturer/Senior Lecturer in Global Mental Health We have an exciting and challenging vacancy for a full time non-clinical Lecturer/Senior Lecturer in Global Mental Health to join the Centre for Global Mental Health. The post is a joint academic position between the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine (0.5 FTE) and the Institute of Psychiatry, King’s College London (0.5 FTE), providing a unique opportunity to work in two world-renowned institutions. The post-holder will be expected to spend half their time at each institution. The successful applicant will be expected to work in 3 domains: research, teaching and citizenship. Research activities will comprise developing and expanding international links to foster research in middle and low income countries, publishing in high impact peer-reviewed journals with research considered as internationally excellent, and obtaining external funding through research grants, fellowships and consultancies, taking advantage of increased opportunities in global mental health funding, and building on the platform provided by existing CGMH funded programmes. Teaching activities will revolve around teaching and tutoring on the new MSc in Global Mental Health, and supervision of research degree students in both institutions. Citizenship activities include co-ordinating the day-to-day activities of the CGMH including liaising with the Centre Directors (Professors Vikram Patel and Martin Prince) about the management of the CGMH, and contributing to the life of LSHTM and KCL-IoP by participating in activities as opportunities arise. Applicants will have a PhD in a related discipline (for example epidemiology, statistics or public health), an established track record in global mental health research with evidence of high quality published research, and prior experience of undergraduate and/or postgraduate teaching. THE DEPARTMENT The Nutrition and Public Health Intervention Research Department (NPHIR) aims to contribute to evidence-based public health through conducting research that supports the development and evaluation of public health interventions in the UK and developing countries. It has a focus on interventions that reduce the excess burden of ill health associated with poverty and deprivation. In particular, the Department aims to facilitate the development of appropriate policies and interventions to reduce this burden, based both on the investigation of new issues and key policies, and on a re-appraisal of existing knowledge. Further information can be obtained at http://www.kcl.ac.uk/hspr THE CENTRE FOR GLOBAL MENTAL HEALTH (CGMH) The Centre for Global Mental Health (CGMH), launched on October 9th 2009, is a collaboration between LSHTM and Kings Health Partners (incorporating KCL, including the IoP and three of London’s most successful NHS Foundation Trusts). The aim of the Centre is to foster research and capacity building in policy, prevention, treatment and care with the ultimate objective of closing the treatment gap for people living with mental, neurological and substance use disorders. The Centre aims to build on the existing collaborations and complementary strengths of these two institutions to foster research and training in policy, prevention, treatment and care. Over 100 staff members and over 20 Research Degree Students are members of the Centre. The Centre fosters collaborations between staff and students from the partner institutions in research, postgraduate education including research degree supervision, and collaboration with external partners. The CGMH has leveraged significant amounts of funding for large programs of work from international donors (£17 million in 2010/11), cementing the reputation of the CGMH as the world leader in global mental health research. Examples of funded projects include the DfID funded Research Partnership Consortium PRIME, two NIMH funded Research Hubs in Mental Health (SHARE and AFFIRM), and a Medical Education Partnership Initiative led by the University of Zimbabwe in partnership with the Centre (IMHERZ).
