POSITION DESCRIPTION:
The Graduate Assistant for Academic Programs for the Department of Housing & Residential Education (HRE)
is responsible for the coordination and implementation of multiple academic and retention initiatives. This
includes but is not limited to the following duties: Coordinating the implementation of our MAP-Works
survey in conjunction with campus stakeholders, liaison with Residential Learning Community (RLC)
stakeholders, plan and implement academic programming that promotes academic success in residence hall
students.
Recruitment & Retention Initiatives
 Collaborate with Assistant Director for Academic Programs, Early Alert & EMSA Project Manager, and
various other campus partners on the implementation and response to the bi-annual MAP-Works survey
 Modify and update the MAP-Works response plan
 Monitor the implementation of MAP-Works and send out regular updates on completion
 Assist with the collection and analysis of data related to student retention in our residential communities
 Market and recruit students to live on campus and in RLC’s
 Utilize MAP-Works data to implement intervention programming that addresses identifiable student
challenges and concerns. For example: Bear Connect, Study Skills, Tutoring Resources, etc…
Academic Initiatives
 Assist in the training and ongoing support of RLC Resident Assistants, Stakeholders, and Hall Directors
 Design and promote community through programs and activities that create an environment conducive
to high academic achievement
 Support academic programming and faculty interaction in the residence hall community
 Collaborate with appropriate RLC staff/stakeholders to provide support to RLC’s
 Promote campus academic resources such as Academic Support & Advising, Tutoring, Career Services,
etc.
Lead On Program
 Aid in all aspects of the facilitation of the Lead On Program during the week before opening.
 Additional Lead On responsibilities as assigned
Committee Work
 Serve on a departmental committee
 Assist additional university committees as assigned and/or approved by the Assistant Director of Student
Engagement.
Administrative Responsibilities
 Complete all administrative tasks in a thorough, accurate, and timely manner.
 Provide excellent customer service to students, staff, and parents through effective communication and
follow-through of emails and phone calls.
 Attend and participate in staff meetings and one-on-one supervisory meetings.
 Develop and maintain working relationships with HRE personnel.

Role Modeling
 Graduate Assistants must display professional behavior and commitment to the Department and the
University.
 Residence Hall Staff are expected to uphold, enforce and live by campus alcohol policies. Staff members
have an obligation to hold each other accountable to the expectations for staff use of alcohol. Residence
Hall Staff found violating policies outlined in the HRE Handbook, Student Rights and Responsibilities,
and/or laws within the State of Colorado may be terminated.
 As an employee with HRE, it is expected that staff act in a professional manner at all times. If a conflict or
disagreement occurs, speak directly with your supervisor about the issue and discuss the situation. It is
inappropriate to gossip or complain to residents or peers about job related items.
 Maintain a positive attitude and appreciate others whose views and attitudes are different than your
own.
 Create a work environment where all students and desk staff, regardless of race, religion, ability, gender
or sexual orientation can learn and be engaged in the life of the institution.
Professionalism
 Maintain an effective working relationship with supervisor and co-workers.
 Demonstrate good written communication skills in reports, correspondence, etc.
 Demonstrate good oral communication and listening skills.
 Demonstrate quality decision making and evaluative skills.
 Serve as a role model for students and staff in areas of ethical decision making and mature choices.
 Project a positive attitude toward the position, department, and institution.
Distribution of Responsibilities
 25% (5 hours) –
Departmental Meetings (including weekly supervisory meetings with the
AD of Student Engagement and professional development sessions).
 25% (5 hours) –
MAP-Works and other Retention Strategies
 25% (5 hours) –
Academic Initiatives/Lead On
 25% (5 hours) Administrative/Committee Work (Reply to Emails, phone calls, etc.)
Conditions of Employment
 GAs are required to be full-time graduate students at UNC while in the position
 GAs must be in good conduct standing with the University and not be on any probationary period
through conduct sanctioning
 The GA will have on-going feedback and evaluations throughout the course of employment with
Residential Education and the GA must maintain satisfactory performance of duties as well as academic
conditions in order to continue employment.
 Outside projects, jobs, internships and extracurricular activities must be preapproved by supervisor.
 Appointment dates begin July 1, 2015 and end May 31, 2016.
Compensation
 Compensation for this eleven (11) month position consists of a monthly stipend, apartment, and a 160
Bear Plan through Dining Services.
 Meals are provided while dining rooms are open for the Academic Year.
