SUMMARY OF POSITION:
The GP is required to play a leadership role within the women’s health program with a focus on maternal and child health,
participating in and providing a range of culturally appropriate comprehensive primary health care services to clients of Danila
Dilba Health Service.
The GP will work closely with Aboriginal health practitioners, midwives and family support workers as well as visiting obstetric
services. In addition there is a close collaborative relationship with the Child health program. There is a significant primary care
component as well as specific program work (management of chronic etc.).
The GP will provide a mentoring role for junior staff, including GP registrars, engage in continuous quality improvement and
clinical governance activities as required and be engaged in reporting activities regarding program activity in key performance
areas.
The GP will be a highly motivated individual who will play a key role in actioning the commitments of Danila Dilba Health
Service’s strategic, business and operational plans whilst providing a high quality standard of primary health care services.
A demonstrated concern for and commitment to the advancement of the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander
community is essential.
OVERVIEW OF DANILA DILBA HEALTH SERVICE (DDHS) AND THE WORK ENVIRONMENT
Background
Established in 1991, Danila Dilba Health Service (DDHS) is a community-controlled organisation providing comprehensive
primary health care services to Biluru communities in the Yilli Rreung Region of the Northern Territory.
The mission of DDHS is to improve the physical, mental, spiritual, cultural and social wellbeing of its clients through innovative
comprehensive primary health care programs that are based on the principles of equity, access, empowerment, community
self-determination and inter-sectoral collaboration.
DDHS is funded primarily by OATSIH (Department of Health and Ageing) to deliver health care services to Aboriginal and
Torres Strait Islander people and employs approximately 117 staff (FTE).

Clinical services are delivered from three (3) facilities in Darwin: Knuckey Street, Darwin – Primary health care

Palmerston - Primary health care and Women’s and Children’s Health programs and Dental

McLaughlin Street, Darwin - Men’s Clinic
Aboriginal Health Practitioners, General Practitioners, Registered Nurses and ancillary staff deliver holistic primary care health
services within the following clinical streams:
 Acute Care and Chronic Disease management
 Child and Maternal health

Male health

Women’s health

Specialist/allied health services (including visiting
physicians, pharmacy, and child development)
A community services team consisting of Aboriginal health workers, family support workers and health practitioners provide a
range of complementary services including:
 Community health engagement/ health promotion

Alcohol, tobacco and other drugs program

Youth services

Emotional and social wellbeing services.
Annually DDHS assists over 7,000 individual clients, providing over 42,000 episodes of health care.
PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES:
Strategic Management
Lead the strategic planning and the development and implementation of goals set in the Operational Plan for the delivery of
Women’s and Maternal and Child Health services (antenatal and post natal care) for the Biluru community.
Where applicable contribute to implementation and ongoing development of the broader DDHS strategic, business and
operational plan
Program Management
Leadership role in the Women’s health program with a focus on antenatal and postnatal care with the aim of improving early
child health outcomes.
Work closely with Aboriginal Health practitioners, midwives, family support staff and visiting obstetricians.
Provide clinical services to clients in the acute setting while applying the principles of chronic disease management to appropriate
cases.
Participate in primary health care program delivery and development.
Participate in screening, recall, follow up and referral processes.
Utilise health check assessments and care planning for all clients.
Administration
Initiate, review and evaluate the clinic’s procedures and practices
Participate in accreditation processes, quality activities and other organisational activities as appropriate.
Partake in clinical audits and reporting against KPI’s as required.
Utilise the Communicare client management system, HIC online and other associated systems to ensure that client records
are maintained accurately and meet all legal obligations;
Be effective and efficient in ensuring timely billing for Medicare, PIP and SIP payments
Human Resource Management
Assist in recruitment and performance management for staff where applicable.
Be involved in induction and orientation of new staff.

Ensure all interactions with clients and staff show appropriate responses to their needs and demonstrate the application of
DDHS’ code of conduct.
Participate in team meetings and staff meetings.
Represent Danila Dilba at meetings, seminars, conferences and functions as appropriate
Promote the role and importance of Aboriginal Community Controlled Health organisations within government and the
community.
Advocate for and represent the interests of Danila Dilba and the Clinic locally and nationally
Safe Practice and Environment
Regularly monitor and review practices and the work environment to ensure a healthy and safe workplace in accordance with
DDHS policies and procedures and legislative requirements.
Ensure the requirements of equal opportunity, and workplace health and safety legislation are met within the clinic.
Comply with infection control standards, policies and procedures to ensure client and employee safety
Quality
Participate in Registrar, Aboriginal Health Practitioner and medical student supervision, education and staff development
sessions.
Contribute to operational system reviews and improvement.
Identify and make recommendations on opportunities to improve processes, quality and service delivery outcomes.
Participate in the development of quality procedures and contribute to internal and external program reviews as required.
Implement and follow the DDHS incident and complaint investigation policies to ensure feedback drives service delivery
improvements.

Registered as a General Practitioner with AHPRA;
A Diploma in obstetrics or >5 years relevant experience in antenatal care;
Experience in ATSI health or other relevant complex / high risk pregnancy community health setting;
Clinical Teaching experience or preparedness to gain accreditation with regional GP registrar training provider NTGPE;
Program management experience
Highly developed communication and interpersonal skills with the ability to liaise with people from a wide range of cultural
and social backgrounds;
Demonstrated high standard of written skills in the preparation of reports, general correspondence and documentations;
Strong organisational skills and demonstrated ability to plan, manage and prioritise tasks and resources to deliver
outcomes within time and budget considerations;
Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively within a multidisciplinary team in a cross cultural and complex environment;
Understanding and respect of the importance of the role of Aboriginal Community Controlled organisations, Aboriginal
Health Workers and other indigenous staff in Aboriginal Health and be willing to respect and support the Danila Dilba
Health Service, Aboriginal Health Worker First policy;
Understanding and/or awareness of the concepts of Aboriginal self-determination;
