TUNGSTEN-RHENIUM NOZZLE
THROAT INSERT EVALUATION
BY JAMI WARD
Jami Ward will present the results of subscale material testing
conducted at ATK, Elkton which evaluated tungsten–rhenium (W-2Re) throat
inserts as a non-eroding solution. Three W-2Re material variations were
evaluated with a 6100°F aluminized propellant. A milestone of the testing
was the successful dual-firing of one throat insert which simulated an
interpulse delay desired for future missile defense applications. The throat
inserts were developed by Plasma Processes Inc. using a vacuum plasma
spray (VPS) on a near-net form process. The results from this testing were
recently published and presented at the JANNAF Annual Joint Propulsion
Conference in Orlando, Florida.
Jami Ward currently works as a Project Engineer in the ATK, Elkton
Control Systems, Gas Generators and Space Group. She received her M.S.
degree in Aerospace Engineering from the University of Central Florida. Her
thesis work focused on acoustic instabilities and control applications in
solid rocket motors.
