JOB DESCRIPTION FORM JOB TITLE: Peer Trainer CONTRACT: Sessional Contract HOURS: Sessional as required (Please note that in this role there will be times when you are expected to work outside of traditional working hours) SALARY Sessional fee will be paid to co-deliver courses and attend monthly peer trainer development group SERVICE SETTING: Jami localities and community settings as required REPONSIBLE TO: Jami Recovery Education Centre Manager (JREC) Jami was established in 1989 by parents, relatives and friends of people who suffered from mental ill health. After close to 25 years of growth and development, in 2013 Jami became responsible for the running of the community’s non-residential mental health provision, creating a single mental health service for the Jewish community in London and the South East. Working alongside statutory services, Jami is committed to supporting people to fulfil their potential, maximize their self-esteem and progress along their own unique pathway towards recovery. Jami’s Focus is on recovery. For some it’s a challenge to simply get out of bed in the morning and get dressed to go to one of Jami’s resources for their only hot meal. For others, moving to voluntary or paid work, for the first time or after a break, may be an achievable goal. Jami’s service supports people at any point in their recovery journey, helping them to develop the skills to live life to the full. JOB PURPOSE/SUMMARY: To work within the education team to assist in the co-production and/or delivery of a range of recovery courses and workshops for service users, their supporters and staff. To assist if required to co-produce and/or deliver mental health awareness raising materials and educational sessions for the community To work within the spirit of co production and co delivery for all presentations & courses. To promote, develop and embed the principles of ‘recovery’ from mental illness across the organisation and in the wider community. DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: 1. Co-produce and/or co-deliver courses as designated with another member of the Jami team as designated by the JREC Manager 2. Organise the IT equipment and photocopies as required for the session in collaboration with your co-facilitator, to ensure Jami’s education courses are run in a professional manner 3. Use evaluation systems in place to ensure all courses can be monitored outcomes can be measured. and 4. Model the use of non-discriminatory, non-jargon and non-medical language in your work to help combat the stigma of mental illness. 5. Consult and inform the JREC Manager of any issues that may affect the efficient running of courses. 6. To work within a coaching paradigm and adhere to the core principles of adult learning in all courses. 7. To identify and address additional learning supports that service users may need to have to enable them to undertake and complete courses. 8. Work within Health and Safety Guidelines, with particular reference to the Lone Worker Policy and individual risk assessments. 9. Ensure compliance with DDA, DPA and Health and Safety legislation. SUPERVISION AND PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT : The post holder will be expected to: Attend regular supervision with the JREC Manager. Incorporate feedback from supervision into practice. Participate in a monthly peer educator supervision group run by the JREC Manager to facilitate professional growth, development and peer support. ESSENTIAL TRAINING AND QUALIFICATIONS EXPERIENCE Willingness to undertake Jami Train the Trainer course Commitment to obtain underpinning knowledge through work based learning and mandatory training. Evidence of ongoing professional/person al development (CPD) DESIRABLE Mental Health First Aid (MHFA) Instructor Lived experience of mental illness Experience of using Jami’s mental health services Self management of your recovery from mental illness Experience of the coproduction of courses in recovery education or awareness raising of mental health issues Participating in recovery education courses KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS Enthusiasm and hope for the recovery journey from mental illness to mental health (both your own and for other people) Excellent interpersonal skills Willingness to share personal experiences of mental health problems as appropriate Delivering presentations Local knowledge of community resources and facilities Knowledge of the Jewish community Ability to form good working relationships with a variety of people Ability to treat people who use our services with respect and dignity at all times, adopting a culturally sensitive approach, which considers the needs of the whole person. Ability to plan and evaluate own work and develop self to enhance performance. It is the responsibility of the post holder to attend training as and when required. The post holder must adhere to the dress code. To attend supervision on a regular basis with the line manager and an annual appraisal. The post holder should have the ability to work in a multi cultural environment that meets the needs of the service users. To carry out any reasonable duties as requested by the designated line manager or other senior person.
