TEXAS HERITAGE SOCIETY Historical trip to central Texas October 16-18, 2015 This outing will start in Austin and end in the historic village of Salado maybe 50 miles to the north. We will spend Friday afternoon in Austin then head up to Salado. We have a block of ten room reserved at the Holiday Inn Express, 1991 Stagecoach Road, in Salado for October 16-18. Single bed is $110 and two beds $120, both discounted $20 until September 20. Call the hotel at 254-947-4004 for reservations. It is the highest rated hotel in the area. Undergraduate students from Texas A&M University at work at the Gault site, Salado, TX Friday, October 16 11:00 am-- Cisco's Restaurant Bakery and Bar, 1511 East 6th Street, Austin. I googled historical restaurants in Austin and Cisco's came up as one of the top ten historic restaurants in the nation. The owner will tell us about the place. 12:30-- Texas Military Forces Museum, 2200 West 35th Street, Austin. This is a fine museum. They say it's Austin's best kept secret. 2:30-- Capitol of Texas, 1100 Congress Avenue, Austin. Meet at Preservation Board parking lot (201 E 14th St.) for tour of the capitol. 4:00-- Texas State Cemetery, 7th and Nevada, Austin. They only accept Texas state officials and Confederate soldiers. We will visit the graves of famous Texans. One of our members Ron Johnson will tell us about his great-great-grandfather James Charles Wilson who is buried there. He was a state senator, captured at Mier and escaped from a prison in Mexico City. 6:30-- Check in at hotel in Salado 7:00-- Dinner at Alexander's Distillery Restaurant, 602 Center Circle, Salado, built in 1880. Saturday, October 17 9:00--Visit the famous archeology excavations at the Gualt site about 25 miles away at Florence (click here). The site challenges previous assumptions about the first humans in America; an interesting trip back in prehistoric times. 12:00-- Lunch in Belton TBA and visit Bell County Museum, 201 North Main St. 2:00-- Chamber of Commerce, 831 Main St. for trolley tour of historic sites of Salado. 3:30-- Salado Creek Winery, 418 North Main St. 4:30-- Salado Glassworks, 2 Peddler's Alley and shopping 7:00-- The Range at Barton House Restaurant, 101 North Main St. Salado, built 1866 and dinner, speaker Bill Kinnison with the local historical society Sunday, October 18 9:00 am--St. Stevens Catholic Church, 601 FM 2268, Salado Please keep me advised about reservations.
