Job Title: Location: Job Function: Time: Application period: On-site Interviews: Start Date: Hourly rate: PLEASE POST----POSITION AVAILABLE Project Research Associate, part-time Cambridge, MA, USA: Peabody Museum of Archaeology and Ethnology/Small Molecule Mass Spectrometry Facility/Straus Center for Conservation Analytical research 17 hours/week for 10 months (from start date, hourly basis) Now through October 9, 2013 October 30, 31 and November 1, 2013 On or before November 19 2013 $14.14 Duties and Responsibilities: A temporary project research associate position has recently been made available with funding from the National Center for Preservation Technology and Training/NPS. The project involves identification of mammalian sources of materials found in objects of cultural heritage. Details of previous work can be found at: http://www.rsc.org/chemistryworld/2013/07/collagen-peptide- mass-fingerprint-museum Working in a research laboratory the position will include sample preparation and processing (protein digestion and analysis using MALDI-TOF MS), identifying and gathering reference materials from several museum and aquarium collections, and sampling museum objects. Selected applicant will maintain project’s ongoing database(s), ensuring accurate data entry, provide interim summary reports, and produce one or more presentations on work-in-process. Position will be trained/supervised by an analytical chemist and/or conservator. Qualifications: Individuals who have a strong interest in analytical techniques and prior chemistry lab experience are encouraged to apply. Position requires a B.A. or B.S. in chemistry, biological sciences, art conservation, or anthropology. Position requires ability to follow detailed protocols with minimal supervision after training, excellent laboratory skills, strong attention to detail, ability to maintain accurate documentation of lab materials and processes, and ease with repetitive activities. Position will require familiarity with searching online databases, including museum collections management databases. Knowledge of digital imaging best practices and familiarity with imaging processing tools is desirable. Project will require excellent writing skills and interpersonal communication skills.
