PSYCHOLOGY EXTERNSHIP
PEDIATRIC PSYCHOLOGY at
CHILDREN’S HOSPITAL AT MONTEFIORE
The Children’s Hospital at Montefiore (CHAM) offers one pediatric psychology externship position with the Behavioral
Consultation Team. This consultation/liaison team offers both inpatient and outpatient mental health services to an
ethnically diverse population of youth with medical illness and their families in the Bronx. The externship offers training
in individual and group psychotherapy using the following approaches: dialectical behavior therapy, cognitive-behavioral
therapy, parent training, and crisis intervention. Training also includes 2-3 hours of weekly supervision, participation in
weekly case conferences with a multidisciplinary team, MMC grand rounds, and access to the Montefiore and Einstein
libraries. Additionally, externs receive monthly mentorship meetings with the externship training director that focus on
professional development issues and assistance with internship applications, if applicable.
Clinical Experiences:
The CHAM BCT is a specialized team that offers short-term treatments to children and adolescents with chronic
medical conditions and their families. Experiences include:
 2 cases using DBT adaptation for medical non-adherence for a pediatric patient
 2-3 CBT or parent training cases in various pediatric departments (e.g., endocrine, rheumatology, G/I,
adolescent medicine, hem/onc, etc.)
o At least one case in the hem/onc department
 Extensive intake evaluations that include liaison with medical subspecialties
 Comprehensive neuropsychological evaluations for children at risk for neurocognitive sequelae due to sickle
cell disease or cancer-directed treatment
 Participation in inpatient consultations for a range of issues including suicidality, behavioral problems on
the pediatric unit, psychosis, delirium, and substance use
 Co-lead 1 empirically-based group (12 month rotation; possible to do 2 6-month rotations if interested) - see
below for a listing of all groups offered (other groups can be created depending on extern interest and
patient availability).

3. Younger Diabetes Activity Group
4. Teen Chronic Pain Group
5. Oncology or Sickle Cell Support Group
NOTE: A total of 2-3 hours of clinical supervision (individual and group modalities) for work conducted
will be provided on a weekly basis.
Requirements:
 Fourth year doctoral candidate in a clinical, school-clinical, or health psychology program with at least two
years of previous clinical experience providing psychotherapy
 Available 2-3 days a week (up to 19 hours). Days are flexible.
 Must attend an intensive DBT training at Montefiore on 5 consecutive Thursdays throughout July and August
2016.
 Available for a 12 month externship from 7/1/16-6/30/17. These dates are not flexible.
