Student Response to Intervention Scenario Activity
Bill often says he hates school. One morning he refused to open his math book or get out his notebook and
just sat there. The teacher reminded him to get started. He said he hated math and folded his arms.
The teacher approached him and said that he needed to get ready for math or he would have to do it
during the break. Bill then pushed the math book on the floor and said he was not going to do any …
(expletive) math. The teacher sent him to the office for noncompliance and disrespect. While in the office,
the principal conferenced with Bill and referred him to the school counselor who set up a weekly time for
Bill to stop by her office.
When Bill received his third ODR, he met the data decision rule for Tier 2 intervention. As the team
completed the Intervention Planning Guide, it was also documented that he had four classroom minors,
and his grades were all C’s except in math, where his grade for the past 6 months had consistently been a
D+. Bill’s attendance and tardies were not a concern.
All three ODR’s were for noncompliance and disrespect; 2 occurred in math and 1 in science, which
immediately preceded math class in Bill’s daily schedule.
Bill received four classroom minors: one instance of inappropriate language (in science), two for
inappropriate use of technology (using the computer to play games instead of accessing a math tutorial),
and one for not following teacher request to return to seat during language arts. When teachers were
asked how they responded to these minor behaviors, all three teachers said that they first reminded Bill of
the expectation. When he did not comply with the reminder, the science and math teachers privately
conferenced with Bill. The language arts teacher had Bill return to his seat and work on an alternate
activity; she also offered to provide Bill with extra help.
Bill has been taught schoolwide and classroom expectations and has received recognition within the past
month.
What the Tier 2 team decided:
The team decided that the function of Bill’s behavior was to obtain adult attention. They came to this
conclusion because after each minor, the teacher gave Bill attention by reminding him of the expectation,
offering him extra help, and on two occasions, the teachers conferenced with Bill. Additionally, Bill
received the principal’s attention and weekly time with the counselor when sent to the office for his
ODR’s. They decided to place Bill in the Check-in/Check-out intervention.
Since most of the inappropriate behavior occurred in math class, the math teacher increased positive
feedback when Bill complied with teacher requests; this increased feedback was in addition to the DPR
rating time at the end of each class period.

The team met after three weeks to review Bill’s progress based upon his DPR data.
Three different scenarios are presented for how Bill’s data could look. How would your team respond to
each set of data?
