POP! Build- Wong Tin Yan Teaching plan: Be a builder for two days. Children will take part in building a pavilion structure which will be used as children’s performance and art exhibition at Osage Gallery. Artist Wong Tin Yan will introduce children to understand nature of pallets wood material and through traditional woodworking joints, a pavilion will be constructed in the end. The structure will be built from scratch and children can experience what real construction entails! There will be supervision and assistance throughout the activity. __________________________________________________________________________________________ Tuition: HK$800 Open for ages: 6 – 12 Capacity: 30 people Dates and Times: Day 1│July 27│Sat 2pm – 5pm Workshop: introducing how to work with wood and making components to form the structure Day 2│July 28│Sun 2pm – 5pm Workshop: assembling the structure together Both sessions will have breaks serving light snack and drinks. __________________________________________________________________________________________ Artist tutor’s bio: Wong Tin Yan There is a lot of pallets discarded everywhere in Hong Kong, the chance founding it may be even higher than a tree. The bold and unconstrained texture of the pallet is unique. By using this recycle material, either by Chinese joining techniques or D.I.Y. furniture style; animal-like cartoon sculptures are created. Not only embodying the mixed-cultural spirit in Hong Kong, the way of my observation, learning experience and trail among toys, cartoons, spaces and structures can also be revealed. Wong Tin Yan was born in Hong Kong. He graduated from the Department of Fine Arts, Chinese University in Hong Kong at 2000. As a sculptor, he likes to collect some useless pieces of wood and either by Chinese joining techniques or D.I.Y. furniture style; he makes them become animal cartoon sculptures. They are not only affordable and comprehensible, but also symbolic of the philosophy about usefulness and uselessness, the transformation of gravitas into humor, and the migration from tradition to contemporary. That’s why it is well received by the public and his works was collected by Hong Kong Museum of Art and private collectors. He was selected by The Art Promotion Office and Hong Kong Trade Department Council to join the local and overseas exhibition. And he was the first artist having exhibition in a showcase train of railway around the world. From 2009-2010, co-operated with world-famous brands, he had solo exhibitions at the store of SPORTMAX, LOUIS VUITTON Hong Kong flagship store and MUJI respectively. Moreover, he had awarded by Perspective magazine as 40 under 40, one of the next generation artist 2010.
