Artist tutor’s bio:
Wong Tin Yan
There is a lot of pallets discarded everywhere in Hong Kong, the chance founding it may be even higher than a
tree. The bold and unconstrained texture of the pallet is unique. By using this recycle material, either by
Chinese joining techniques or D.I.Y. furniture style; animal-like cartoon sculptures are created. Not only
embodying the mixed-cultural spirit in Hong Kong, the way of my observation, learning experience and trail
among toys, cartoons, spaces and structures can also be revealed.
Wong Tin Yan was born in Hong Kong. He graduated from the Department of Fine Arts, Chinese University in
Hong Kong at 2000. As a sculptor, he likes to collect some useless pieces of wood and either by Chinese joining
techniques or D.I.Y. furniture style; he makes them become animal cartoon sculptures. They are not only
affordable and comprehensible, but also symbolic of the philosophy about usefulness and uselessness, the
transformation of gravitas into humor, and the migration from tradition to contemporary. That’s why it is well
received by the public and his works was collected by Hong Kong Museum of Art and private collectors. He
was selected by The Art Promotion Office and Hong Kong Trade Department Council to join the local and
overseas exhibition. And he was the first artist having exhibition in a showcase train of railway around the
world. From 2009-2010, co-operated with world-famous brands, he had solo exhibitions at the store of
SPORTMAX, LOUIS VUITTON Hong Kong flagship store and MUJI respectively. Moreover, he had awarded
by Perspective magazine as 40 under 40, one of the next generation artist 2010.
