Cathedral Church of the Nativity 2014 Vestry Candidates Profiles (Vote for 5, 3-Year Term) DICK GUYER Dick and his wife Kitsy live in Bethlehem. He works for American Water and is Manager-Supply Chair. He has been a member of Nativity since 1970. DON KELLEY Don lives in Center Valley with his wife Sandy. They have been members of Nativity since 1990. He has a degree in Electrical Engineering and is retired as a Senior Project Engineer from Nuclear Engineering, Pennsylvania Power and Light Company, and currently employed as a Senior Instructor of Computer/Software Engineering for Learning Tree International. Don believes these experiences and his varied experiences at Nativity will provide contributions to the Vestry for the management of responsibilities at Nativity. Don is most excited about attracting new church members and increasing our Sunday school attendance, continuing our outreach ministries, and continued efforts for a balanced budget. He believes the challenges for the future are: increasing church membership, financial stability and ongoing emphasis on mission, ministries and outreach. Don’s wife Sandy is involved in many ministries at Nativity also and they enjoy working together in the History Group. Don and Sandy have four children, six grandchildren and a one-year old great grandson. Their twins, Susan and Sarah, attended Nativity in their youth and enjoyed singing in the choir. Their son Scott and daughter Kim are members of Episcopal Parishes in Harleysville, Pennsylvania and Raleigh, North Carolina. HARRY JOHNSTON No photo or bio available. JOE HAFICH Joe lives in Allentown. He is married 33 years to Linda. They have a son, Ryan who lives in Santa Cruz, CA and a daughter Jessica, who was involved with the choir when she was growing up. Jessica lives at home yet and works in the Poconos. They have a dog, Hazel, a Golden-Doodle, for their daughter, but who turned out to be his buddy. The Hafich family transferred from The Church of the Mediator in Allentown in the 1990’s so their daughter Jessica could attend church and functions with Belinda Baez, and Linda could sing in the choir. Joe is involved with the Personnel Committee. He is President of Operations for Emergency Systems Service—one of the principal’s in a family business, 2nd generation, 40 years in business, approximately 40 people, responsible for overall focus, management and growth. Joe is excited about a new choir director and the energy and vision that it will bring. When asked what he sees as the greatest challenge for the future of the Cathedral, he said attracting and keeping young families involved with the church. KRIS WARNER Kris Warner is completing her second year on the vestry, fulfilling a term position. She is married to Andrew Warner, has two children, Grace and Drew and a black lab, Saki. Her children were baptized at the Nativity and are presently enrolled in the J2A and Rite 13 programs. Kris grew up in the Lehigh Valley. She graduated with an Education Degree from Bloomsburg University and holds a Master’s Degree as a Reading Specialist. She taught first grade for 14 years and now enjoys her time with family and community work. Kris has participated on various committees within the Junior League of the Lehigh Valley and is presently very active on the board of The Auxiliary of St. Luke’s University Hospital. She also spends many hours working at Black River Farms, tending the vineyard and gardens. She likes to read and play tennis in her spare time. Kris was baptized and confirmed at St. John’s UCC. She joined the Nativity in 1991 and has had the pleasure of serving as a Chalice Bearer, Pastoral Visitor and assists with the Monday Flower Arranging Group. TORI AITCHISON Tori lives in Bethlehem with her husband Kent and sons David and Matthew. She grew up Catholic and said it was always a treat to join her grandmother, Lala Leach, for the late Christmas Eve service at Nativity. After graduating from Lehigh, she started attending with her grandmother and was received and then married at the Cathedral. She enjoyed teaching J2A and Rite 13 and being involved in the Sesquicentennial Celebration. Her volunteer leadership with organizations including United Way, St. Luke's Hospital and Good Shepherd combined with her professional fundraising experience with Lehigh University have provided a wonderful opportunity to learn and grow. As a student in Spiritual Direction at Moravian Theological Seminary, Tori is learning to approach her activities in a more contemplative way. Tori is excited to see young families join Nativity, especially knowing all the gifts it has brought to her family. She is grateful that new programs like the Priscilla Payne Hurd lecture series and the Celtic Spirituality journey provide opportunities for personal refection and community fellowship. Tori also feels we are grounded in service through the Emergency Shelter program. She sees the greatest challenge for Nativity to nurture so many people who have different spiritual needs and who have many competing interests and commitments for time. WERNER REINARTZ Werner and his wife Mary Joy joined the Cathedral in 2005. They attended confirmation and the welcoming classes and were married at the Cathedral on May 7, 2006. They have participated in the building restoration as a benefactor, are weekly participants and he completed DOCC classes in 2012/2013. Werner said they have gained meaningful friendships from their church community through dinner groups and Cathedral sponsored activities; Mary Joy was a dinner group coordinator for several years; Gillian was a camp participant and a camp counselor, and participated in the pilgrimage to Washington State in her J2A class. Werner graduated from Stevens Institute of Technology in 1972 with a degree in engineering. Since then, he has worked in technical sales and marketing, product management, sales and marketing management, international sales and business ownership. He is presently President and CEO of Reynolds & Reynolds Electronics, Inc. This company manufactures and sells emergency power units to the elevator industry. Werner looks forward to the Cathedral serving the community for another 150 years. He said he personally may not witness it, but believes the choices we make today can sustain our future. He feels the Cathedral’s greatest challenge are the needs to expand its base of parishioners. It can do this by organic growth and outreach. Without an expanded base that is young and active, the church will struggle in the short and longer term to deliver its fundamental mission. The present state of limited resources restrict outreach and curtail some simulative activities. It also prevents us from finding and keeping the best talent in the congregation. Werner and Mary Joy live as empty nesters: Kevin has graduated from Temple University and is trying to find his way in the film and media industry in Los Angeles, CA. Gillian attended East Stroudsburg University and intends to finish her education at another school. Mary Joy is President/CEO of VIA of the Lehigh Valley, a resource to children and adults with disabilities, and serves of the board of directors at Horizon House Inc., an multi-state organization providing treatment and rehabilitation services to individuals with mental illness, homelessness, and developmental disabilities.
