Calgary and The City of Calgary. ACWA's main goal is to develop wastewater treatment technologies that
will remove existing and emerging contaminants to improve ecosystem and human health.

Caption: ACWA features 3.6 km of naturalized, experimental streams replicate real-life water situations
and enable research that cannot currently be performed anywhere else.

Caption: The 12 streams are 350 m each, and are fully connected to the city plant, allowing researchers
to study live effluent in real time and perform controlled, repeatable experiments upstream, in-plant,
and downstream simultaneously.

Sampling streams
Caption: With ACWA’s large scale, natural environment test streams and the supporting Microbiology,
Aquatic and Stable Isotope laboratories on the University of Calgary campus, researchers can quantify
contaminant residues, identify and culture cells, determine water-borne pathogens and examine gene
expression in model organisms to ensure clean, safe drinking water.

treatment plant – ACWA allows scientists and municipal water providers to answer remediation
questions that nobody else can.
