UPCOMING EVENTS AT HAYFIELD
◊ Want an NIH Internship next summer? The National Institutes of Health in Bethesda, MD sponsors a
summer internship program called “HiSTEP” for students who are currently in 10th, 11th, or 12th grade.
Learn more about the program on Tuesday, November 10 at 10:00 (SOAR Time) in Ms. Rahman’s
classroom (Room 1329)- across from the HS Lecture Hall. Pick up a pass from Ms. Rahman in Room 1329
or from Mrs. Ferguson in the Career Center. More info on the program is here:

◊ For Senior Parents- “Coffee Talk” on Financial Aid & Scholarships: The Career Center will host a
“coffee talk” for senior parents on Veterans Day, November 11, at 7:30 a.m. in the Middle School
Lecture Hall. Our guest speakers will be Dale Schmidt, Financial Aid Champion with College Access
Fairfax, and Lisa Grant, parent of a 2015 Hayfield graduate. We will discuss the financial aid and
scholarship application processes. Free coffee provided! RSVPs are appreciated, so we have enough
handouts for everyone: ahferguson@fcps.edu.
◊ ASVAB- Thinking about joining the military after high school? The ASVAB is the entrance exam for the
U.S. military services. Hayfield will offer the ASVAB on November 23 to all interested 10th, 11th and 12th
grade students. Registration form was e-mailed to students and parents on Tuesday, November 3, or a
paper copy can be picked up outside the Career Center door. Deadline to register is Monday, Nov. 16.
UPCOMING FCPS EVENTS
◊ Apprenticeship and Skilled Trades Career Fair- Thursday, November 12 from 1:00- 4:00 p.m. Edison
Academy will host an Apprenticeships & Skilled Trades Career Fair in the Edison High School Lecture Hall
to showcase career opportunities in the in-demand skilled trades for high school students and recent
graduates. Currently, there are nineteen companies attending this event, representing two-year degree
programs, certificate programs, and apprenticeships in the skilled trades. Students are encouraged to

parents must pre-arrange an early dismissal through the Hayfield Attendance Office. There will be no
field trip bus provided for the event- students must provide their own transportation.**
SENIORS ONLY: “Scholarship 101”**- Wednesday, November 4 at 7:00 p.m. at West Potomac HSLearn about how to apply for scholarships, including tips on applications, web sites and other sources of
scholarship information. Register: www.collegeaccessfairfax.org. (Juniors and younger students are
asked to attend the spring “Scholarship 101” workshop at Hayfield on the evening of May 18, 2016.)

Financial Aid Night- Wednesday, December 2 at 7:00 p.m. at South County HS. Guest speaker: Chad
Spencer, Associate Dean, Davidson College. Information about the FAFSA, types of loans, and financial
aid will be provided. No pre-registration necessary.
SENIORS ONLY: FAFSA Line-By-Line/ CSS Profile**- Saturday, December 12 from 9:00 a.m.-noon at Lee
High School. The first half of the program will be an explanation of the information required to complete
the FAFSA (federal financial aid form). The second half of the program will cover the CSS Profile, which
some colleges also require, in addition to the FAFSA. Register: www.collegeaccessfairfax.org. Spanish

◊ College Survival 101 at George Mason University- Saturday, November 21. Sponsored by the
Northern Va. Urban League Young Professionals Network, College Survival 101 features a full day of

◊ Primeros Pasos at Virginia Commonwealth University- Saturday, November 21. VCU Admissions
sponsors an open house specifically for Latino high school students and their families. Bilingual
presentations for parents on financial aid & scholarships, a panel discussion with current students,

◊ Hugh O’Brian Youth Leadership Seminar- “HOBY” is a weekend seminar (June 3-5, 2016) at James
Madison University for high school sophomores who are the most visible leaders in their schools.

Fall Blast/ Fall Fling at the University of Virginia invites talented juniors and seniors to its annual open
house events: Fall Blast (for Hispanic/Latino students) is Friday, November 13 and Fall Fling is Saturday,

Other Opportunities
U.S. Department of State recently announced scholarships for American high school students to study
abroad. Applications are now being accepted for their study abroad programs for U.S. high school
students. These merit-based scholarships include international airfare, tuition, and program costs, as
well as meals and living accommodations (often with a host family). The programs have no language
prerequisites, and gap year students are encouraged to apply as long as they meet the age
requirements. Each program has its own requirements, application, and deadline. Info:

Association of American Medical Colleges- Minority Student Medical Career Fair- Saturday, November
7, 2015 from 7:00 a.m.- 5:00 p.m. at the Baltimore Convention Center, MD. For high school and college
students and their parents- meet reps from medical schools, hear panel discussions on pathways to
become a physician, learn about special AAMC programs. Register: www.aamc.org/medicalcareerfair.
National Portfolio Day is an event specifically for visual artists and designers. It is an opportunity for
those who wish to pursue an education in the visual and related arts to meet with representatives from
colleges accredited by the National Association of Schools of Art and Design. Representatives will be
available to review your artwork, discuss their programs and answer questions about professional
careers in art. The DC event is Saturday, November 21 from 10:00 a.m.- 2:00 p.m.at GWU’s Marvin

SENIOR CLASS INFORMATION
◊ FREE financial aid help here at Hayfield! We are fortunate to have a financial aid expert here at
Hayfield to help families fill out forms and understand the process. Dale Schmidt of College Access
Fairfax is here at Hayfield’s Career Center during most SOAR times. You can make an appointment with
him to fill out the CSS Profile (a form you need for UVA and W&M) or just drop by with questions.
Parents are welcome, too! He will be here during SOAR Time (9:30- 11:00 a.m.) on November 4, 10, 16
and 18.

Northern Va. Community College’s Pathway to the Baccalaureate is now accepting applications from
SENIORS. PtB is a program for seniors who plan to complete their associate’s degree at NOVA before
finishing their bachelor’s degree at a four-year college. Students admitted to the program will receive
assistance with their transition to NOVA, including admissions, financial aid, placement testing, and
registration for fall 2016 classes. Applications available now from your counselor or the Career Center,
and are due to your counselor by THIS FRIDAY, November 6. Special help session this Friday, November
6 in the Career Center during SOAR and all lunches- get last minute help on your Pathway application!
Applying to Mary Washington, Longwood, and/or Radford?
These three Virginia colleges will be coming to Hayfield soon, and delivering your admission decision to
you in person! Each college does their “on-site” a little differently- please CAREFULLY read the
requirements below for info on how to participate. If you have any questions, please contact Mrs.
Ferguson.
University of Mary Washington “On-Site” Decision Day- Monday, November 9 at 11:30 a.m. To
participate, complete your UMW admissions application on Common App and give your
counselor a transcript request form (write “ON-SITE” on it) no later than November 5. Send test
scores online from www.sat.org and/or www.actstudent.org.
◊ Longwood University “On-Site” Decision Day- Thursday, November 19 at 8:30 a.m. Apply to
Longwood online by November 10. Give Mrs. Bury (transcript assistant in the main office) your
transcript request form by 7:45 a.m. on November 16. Give Mrs. Ferguson an unofficial copy of
your SAT and/or ACT scores (“print screen” is fine), and letters of recommendation (not
required) by 7:45 a.m. on November 16. Questions? See Mrs. Ferguson in the Career Center.
Radford University “On-Site” Decision Day- Thursday, December 17 at 9:35 a.m. Apply to
Radford online and give your counselor a transcript request form (write “ON-SITE” on it) by
Friday, November 20 (deadline extended! Originally published date was 11/16). Send test scores
online from www.sat.org and/or www.actstudent.org.
College Essay Writing Workshops- Wednesday, November 18 at 3:00 p.m. The Hawk Writing Center
and the Career Center are co-sponsoring two college/ scholarship essay writing workshops this fall. Get
help starting or editing your essays for college or scholarship applications. Sign up in Family Connection
under “College Visits”.

VOLUNTEER OPPORTUNITIES
Need Volunteer Service Hours? Attend a Teen Volunteer Information Night at your local library! Library
staff will show you how to find agencies in need of volunteers and explore upcoming volunteer
opportunities. The closest event to Hayfield is at Richard Byrd Library in Springfield on Thursday,

Eddie’s Club- Volunteer to be a buddy for special needs kids! The club meets once a month for two
hours at Irving Middle School in Springfield. Activities include arts & crafts, games, sports, and more.

Lee District RECenter- Fairfax County Park Authority is looking for volunteers to help with their Adapted
Aquatics class. No experience necessary, but must be willing to make a commitment for the entire eight

KEEN DC is looking for volunteer “coaches” to work with special needs kids and young adults at their
one-on-one activity days. No athletic experience required! Programs are always on the first and third

South Run RECenter needs help sprucing up their landscape! Bring work gloves, water and a snack, and
your service hours form (if you need one signed). Volunteers must be 16 to come alone; younger

JOB OPPORTUNITIES
Wheel Nuts Bike Shop in Alexandria is hiring a mechanic/ sales person. Previous mechanic experience is
preferred, but owner will teach a motivated individual. Applications and position description available in
the Hayfield Career Center.
Personal Assistant Needed- A local resident with medical issues is looking for a Hayfield student to help
her around her condo from time to time, such as helping cook from time to time, filing, helping clean
out closets etc. Hours are flexible, and only a few per week is necessary. Salary is $15/hour. Must be
comfortable around a large service dog. Visit the Hayfield Career Center for more details.
