ACT Boot Camp- Saturday and Sunday, October 17 & 18 from 9:00 a.m.- 1:00 p.m. Learn strategies for maximizing your ACT score! The class is $175, and is taught by Catalyst Prep. The ASVAB is the entrance exam for the U.S. military services. Hayfield will offer the ASVAB on November 23. Registration will begin on Wednesday, November 4- registration form will be e-mailed to all 10-11-12th graders on that date. Future Quest is a FREE College and Career Forum for students with disabilities, parents, and professionals. Participants will have the opportunity to select from a variety of workshops about Options After High School, Employment, Assistive Technology, and College and Career Planning. SENIORS ONLY: FAFSA Line-By-Line/ CSS Profile**- Saturday, December 12 from 9:00 a.m.-noon at Lee High School. The first half of the program will be an explanation of the information required to complete the FAFSA (federal financial aid form). The Society of Women Engineers at the University of Virginia invites high school seniors and juniors to apply for a place in their High School Visitation program, taking place Saturday, November 14th, 2015. The program gives young women a comprehensive look at engineering fields and at UVA’s engineering curriculum through informative speakers and hands-on design activities. To apply, students should complete the HSV Fall 2015 Application. The fall program is geared towards high school seniors, but juniors are invited to apply as well. APPLICATIONS DUE FRI., OCT. 23 @ 11:59 P.M. ◊ University of North Georgia’s National Leadership Challenge Weekend- November 13-15 The weekend is run on their Dahlonega Campus and at Camp Frank D Merrill (mountain phase of Army Ranger school). Students will get to rappel down a rock face, construct a rope bridge across a rushing mountain stream, negotiate a tough leadership reaction course, and more. Cost is $115. Other Opportunities ◊ U.S. Department of State recently announced scholarships for American high school students to study abroad. Applications are now being accepted for their study abroad programs for U.S. high school students. These merit-based scholarships include international airfare, tuition, and program costs, as well as meals and living accommodations (often with a host family). The programs have no language prerequisites, and gap year students are encouraged to apply as long as they meet the age requirements. Each program has its own requirements, application, and deadline. It is an opportunity for those who wish to pursue an education in the visual and related arts to meet with representatives from colleges accredited by the National Association of Schools of Art and Design. College Essay Writing Workshops- Wednesday, November 18 at 3:00 p.m. The Hawk Writing Center and the Career Center are co-sponsoring two college/ scholarship essay writing workshops this fall. Community College’s Pathway to the Baccalaureate is now accepting applications from SENIORS. PtB is a program for seniors who plan to complete their associate’s degree at NOVA before finishing their bachelor’s degree at a four-year college. Students admitted to the program will receive assistance with their transition to NOVA, including admissions, financial aid, placement testing, and registration for fall 2016 classes. Applications available now from your counselor or the Career Center, and are due to your counselor by November 6. Applying to JMU? If you want to submit a recommendation letter (it is OPTIONAL- it’s not necessary to have one), please read the following statement from JMU’s Undergraduate Admissions website: “If an applicant wishes to have one included with their application, it must be requested by the applicant via our online recommendation system during the application process. JMU will contact the recommender with instructions for submitting the recommendation letter. Any additional letters of recommendation will not be reviewed.” Also note- after you hit the “submit” button on your JMU application, you CANNOT change your response re: the recommendation letter. JMU’s admissions representative will visit Hayfield on Wednesday, October 21 at 10:00 a.m. and can answer additional questions. JUNIOR CLASS INFORMATION Save the date!
