Future Quest is a FREE College and Career Forum for students with disabilities, parents, and professionals. Participants will have the opportunity to select from a variety of workshops about Options After High School, Employment, Assistive Technology, and College and Career Planning. The keynote speaker, Justin Graves, will inspire participants to use their passion to help others by focusing on their abilities. The Resource Fair will give participants the opportunity to browse community supports and services and better understand available resources as they transition to life. The first half of the program will be an explanation of the information required to complete the FAFSA (federal financial aid form). Overnight event that for high school seniors to explore both the academic and social aspects of the Trinity community with a focus on the experiences of students of color. The It Girls Overnight Retreat is a Syracuse University School of Information Studies (iSchool) program for outstanding 11th and 12th grade women interested in a “slumber party meets hackathon” on their campus on October 11-12. “It Girls” meet barrier-breaking role models from the tech industry, connect with iSchool student mentors, faculty, and staff, and engage in hands-on workshops that open their eyes to the endless possibilities of a career in technology. The Society of Women Engineers at the University of Virginia invites high school seniors and juniors to apply for a place in their High School Visitation program, taking place Saturday, November 14th, 2015. The program gives young women a comprehensive look at engineering fields and at UVA’s engineering curriculum through informative speakers and hands-on design activities. To apply, students should complete the HSV Fall 2015 Application. The fall program is geared towards high school seniors, but juniors are invited to apply as well. Get help starting or editing your essays for college or scholarship applications. Sign up in Family Connection under “College Visits”. Northern Va. Community College’s Pathway to the Baccalaureate is now accepting applications from SENIORS. PtB is a program for seniors who plan to complete their associate’s degree at NOVA before finishing their bachelor’s degree at a four-year college. Students admitted to the program will receive assistance with their transition to NOVA, including admissions, financial aid, placement testing, and registration for fall 2016 classes. Applications available now from your counselor or the Career Center, and are due to your counselor by November 6. Applying to JMU? If you want to submit a recommendation letter (it is OPTIONAL- it’s not necessary to have one), please read the following statement from JMU’s Undergraduate Admissions website: “If an applicant wishes to have one included with their application, it must be requested by the applicant via our online recommendation system during the application process. JMU will contact the recommender with instructions for submitting the recommendation letter. Any additional letters of recommendation will not be reviewed.” Also note- after you hit the “submit” button on your JMU application, you CANNOT change your response re: the recommendation letter. JMU’s admissions representative will visit Hayfield on Wednesday, October 21 at 10:00 a.m. and can answer additional questions. JUNIOR CLASS INFORMATION Save the date! Junior Parent Night is Wednesday, January 13 at 6:30 p.m. in the Auditorium. TESTING, TESTING! Next SAT- November 7. Deadline to register- October 9. Register online: www.sat.org Next ACT- October 24. Regular registration was September 18. “Late” registration deadline ($25 late fee + regular registration fee)- October 2. There is also a December 12 ACT- deadline to register is November 6. Register online: www.actstudent.org PSAT- All sophomores and juniors will take the PSAT on Wednesday, October 14. Freshmen will take the PSAT9 on the same day. NO REGISTRATION REQUIRED- all students will take the test. Juniors and sophomores will receive a Practice Guide through their English classes this week.
