Course Description
The data management course is an introduction to data manipulation and
management using Stata, SPSS and Epi-data. The course will cover data structure
design including data checking as well as data manipulation, data imputation and
basic statistical programming. The course will be offered at the computer lab where
participants will have hands-on experience in dealing with real data sets. In case an
enrolled participant has a project specific data, he/she will have the chance to
directly apply the acquired course material on the dataset. Weekly assignments will
be given to allow the participants to explore advanced and customized application
of the material offered in the class room.

Individuals engaged in data management in private, governmental, and nongovernmental organizations.
Facilitator
Khalil El Asmar, MSc:
Khalil El Asmar completed his statistical training at the University of Paris XI in
France and currently holds a position of Instructor of Biostatistics at the department
of Epidemiology and Population Health. He also has a graduate degree in
epidemiology from the American University of Beirut. In addition to his statistical
and data management expertise, Khalil has an extensive experience (7 years) in
Monitoring and Evaluation of development programs. His main work revolves
around mental health, experimental designs and statistical computation.
Learning objectives
By the end of the course, participants will be able to:
1. Operate effectively in SPSS, Stata and Epidata environments.
2. Design and organize quantitative data
3. Manage data and perform data quality monitoring and data checking
4. Write basic statistical programs in Stata

Methodology
This course takes a “hands-on” approach. Participants are expected to attend all
sessions and show active participation. Handouts and lecture notes will be
distributed in class. Participants can consult the software tutorials and online
documentations for any needed information.
Duration, time and location
The course is over 2 weeks from June 23 to July 4 (M, W, Th & F):9:00AM -12:00 PM.
Location: Van Dyck building- Computer Lab (Room 105)
Language proficiency
The course language requires an excellent level of English and no translation will be
provided.

The course fees are 300 USD /participant

variables, merging files, working with duplicates
Stata (3) Advanced Stata application, loops, macros.
Presentation of the project (to be submitted on July
