Systematic & Engaging Early Literacy Put Ps in Pockets Goal: Students will identify the letter Pp with modeled support. Target Words: pants, pockets, paste Materials and Preparation: Pants graphic or real pair of pants (cut out the three parts of the pants graphic and put them together to look like a real pair of pants) Pocket graphics (cut out) Letter Pp and letter Ss cards (cut out) Letter Pp and letter Ss picture cards (cut out) Glue Introduce: Say, “These pants are plain. Let’s make them pretty with pockets. We can paste Pps on the pockets or put Pps in the pockets. Please make the plain pants pretty with Pps and pockets.” Playful Practice: Have the students take turns pasting pockets on the pants (Put glue around all the edges of the pockets except the top.). Have the students who didn’t get to paste a pocket on the pants take turns picking a letter card. If they pick a letter Pp, have the students put the letter Pp in a pocket or paste the letter Pp on the pants. If the students choose a letter Ss, have them try again. Example phrases to use during Playful Practice: A Pp to put in the pocket! Paste a Pp on the pants. Look at the Pps in the pocket! Do you want to paste a Pp on pants or put a Pp in a pocket? Review the Playful Experience: Have the students who haven’t had a turn yet take turns choosing a picture card. Have the students identify the picture. Write the name of the picture on the board. Ask the students if the picture on the card starts with the letter Pp. If it does, have the students paste the Pp picture on the pants or put the Pp picture in a pocket. If it starts with the letter Ss, have the student choose another card. 1 BYU David O.
