Alpine U3A Where are we? The Alpine U3A is centred in Mt Beauty in North East Victoria, Australia. Mt Beauty is a small subalpine township at the foot of the Bogong High Plains and Falls Creek ski resort. The area has a population of approximately 2,000 and is located in the magnificent Kiewa Valley nestled in the Victorian high country, approximately 350km by road from Melbourne. Historically the original populated community in the Valley was in Tawonga and in the 1940s the Kiewa Hydro Electric Scheme was built in the mountains at the southern end of the Valley and Mt Beauty was established as a town for the Hydro workers. It has now blossomed into a very popular tourist town. Membership and Activities We have approximately 150 members and over 20 diverse activities including crafts, music, indoor games such as chess, modern languages, discussion groups, strength and fitness, and three different walking groups. These groups range from ‘energetic’ (mountain), ‘gentle’ (6km) to pole walking and all activities provide an excellent source of social contact as well as the intellectual challenges and physical challenges that arise. A very popular recent addition is the Film Society where popular films are shown on a monthly basis in our senior citizens centre Summary The AlpineU3A provides an inspiration to the local community generating not only intellectual satisfaction but social and physical wellbeing also.
