St. Michael & St. Francis Bulletin
February 6th & 7th , 2016
Pastor: Fr. Harry Tully
Fifth Sunday in Ordinary
Time
PREACHING THE GOSPEL
John, the only other evangelist to recount the
story of the miraculous catch of fishes, places the story
after the resurrection of Christ from the dead, not at the
beginning of his ministry, as Luke does here. Unlike
Matthew and Mark, who write that the disciples
immediately follow Jesus at his summons, Luke seems
to know that his listeners will comprehend the call to
discipleship better if it follows a miraculous sign. But
whether it’s Luke describing the beginning of the
disciples following Jesus in mission, or John’s
depiction of the risen Christ preparing his followers for
the mission facing them after his return to the Father,
the point is the same—and remains the same for us
today. Paul expresses it best. It does not matter who
preaches the gospel, or where or when, but only that it
is, through the grace of God in us, preached and
believed.
GOD IS CALLING
When God calls you to preach that gospel,
what will be your response? Do you feel you have what
it takes to love and serve? God knows your gifts and your goodness, even where the only things you may see are your faults. Despite
these flaws, or perhaps even because of them, God wants you just as you are, just as God called Isaiah, Paul, and Peter. God assured
and strengthened them in spite of their fears. Even as Paul said, “I am the least of the apostles, not fit to be called an apostle” (1
Corinthians 15:9). Even as the psalmist said, “When I called, you answered me; you built up strength within me” (Psalm 138:3).
Remember, Peter finally said, “At your command I will lower the nets” (Luke 5:5).
Today’s readings offer a clarion call to each of us to live the vocation to which God has called us. Through our baptism, we
have been invited to live out God’s vibrant love each day, making some hard choices as we go along. Today’s readings offer food for
the journey as we try and try again to leave everything and follow Jesus.
Today’s readings: Isaiah 6:1–2a, 3–8; Psalm 138:1–5, 7–8; 1 Corinthians 15:1–11 [3–8, 11]; Luke 5:1–11

Pastor’s Corner
Dear Parishioners,
“They left everything and followed Him.” How
difficult would it be for you to leave everything to
pursue a new job in some foreign place? I know I
have a hard time when I have moved from one
parish to another! Leaving that which is familiar
and comfortable is difficult to say the least. How
hard it must be for people to leave their home and
face all sorts of hardships to escape war, famine,
hatred for some place where the future seems to
be brighter! What did those who followed Jesus
leave behind, was it hard for them to do what
they did? But they did and so have countless
others who answered the call of Jesus to be
disciples and “Fishers” of men. We have to
answer that call everyday living for the glory of
God. And yes Jesus asks us to live for Him,
keeping our eyes fixed on the path He bids us
walk, proclaiming along the way the brighter
future we are all called to. Lent begins this
Wednesday and maybe this should be our theme,
how eager am I to follow Jesus, how distracted
am I by the things and people in my life, what
does Jesus want from me and what am I offering
Him?
Please be sure to check the bulletin for the
times and Lenten activities for our two Parishes.
Let's us try to take advantage of all opportunities
to 'leave everything' and follow Jesus.

Faith Formation Commission Meeting is Wednesday,
February 10 at 6:30pm Rectory Meeting Room.
We parents may leave faith instruction to the
professionals, forgetting that our example influences our
children far more than a catechist who sees them just a
few hours a week. Whatever our riches---money, leisure,
education, a good mind, a strong body, beautiful voice,
or even temperament---these are given to us to build up
the Body of Christ. If we’re not using our gifts for the
benefit of those whose care we are charges with, then
they are being cheated. And so are we. Paige Byrne
