Version: Amended as of April 17, 2012
Senate Session: XXIV
First Reading: April 10, 2012
As Amended April 17, 2012
Legislative Act No. 005
WHEREAS, Student Government is the representative body of its student constituents, elected by
its peers; and,
WHEREAS, Student Government seeks to represent its student constituents to the best of its
ability; and,
WHEREAS, The Student Government Constitution mandates that candidates can only stand for
election in one office; and,
WHEREAS, Student Government seeks to encourage and incorporate the participation of all
qualified and enthusiastic students; and,
WHEREAS, Presidential elections typically see more than one qualified candidate facing another,
the nature of which dictates that the defeated candidate, having chosen to run for the highest
office and having bypassed the possibility of running for another office, is now excluded from
Student Government; now therefore be it,
RESOLVED, That the President-elect should seek to incorporate the runner-up of the Presidential
elections in Student Government by appointing the defeated candidate to the position of Chief of
Staff, and, in the event that more than three candidates run for the position, that it is advisable
that the President-elect appoint the most qualified defeated Presidential candidate, the
interpretation of qualifications remaining at the discretion of the President-elect; and be it
further,
RESOLVED, That in the event that the runner up or a defeated candidate in the Presidential
elections may not be the most qualified appointee to assume the role of Chief of Staff, it is
advisable that the President-elect appoint the next most qualified defeated candidate having
stood for election to another Executive Board position; and be it further,
RESOLVED, That the position of Chief of Staff should be that of a non-voting member of the
Executive Board; and be it further,
RESOLVED, That the position of Chief of Staff is not expressly required to assume responsibilities
of the Chair of Academic Affairs Committee, and that the combination of responsibilities of Chief
of Staff and the Chair of Academic Affairs Committee, although existing based on past precedent,
is at the discretion of the President-elect, based on the qualifications of the individual to fill one
or both of the abovementioned roles; and be it further
RESOLVED, That such an appointment is in the spirit of cooperation and continuity, allowing for
qualified and enthusiastic students to serve on Student Government and ensuring that the
experience of a potential defeated candidate is not lost, but remains part of Student Government
through the position of Chief of Staff, thereby preserving the history of Student Government and
establishing cohesion from one Student Government to another, preventing its disappearance for
lack of experience or knowledge of its members.
