SUMMER POSITIONS GRASSLAND BIRD FIELD TECHNICIANS (6) North Dakota, Montana Field Technicians (6) needed for a demography study of grassland-nesting songbirds at two field sites in western North Dakota and northeastern Montana. Field technicians are needed mid-May to early August, 2016. This project aims to determine basic demographic rates of nesting Baird’s Sparrows and other grassland-nesting songbirds, including nest success and productivity, and adult and juvenile survivial. Duties include grassland bird nest-searching, catching and banding sparrows, attaching radio transmitters and geolocators, telemetry tracking, vegetation sampling, and data entry. Work days start pre-dawn and are long, conditions can be windy with extreme temperatures. Salary $2,000-$2,200 per month, depending on experience; lodging and travel to/from study area are provided. Successful applicants will have field proficiency with at least one of the following skills (in decreasing order of importance): handling songbirds, mist-netting songbirds, nestsearching, attaching transmitters or geolocator to songbirds, or radio telemetry. Other desired qualifications include field experience with habitat sampling, and data management skills (Arc GIS, Access, Excel, DNR Garmin). Additionally, technicians need the ability to communicate well, make decisions in the field, work in adverse conditions, and share living quarters with others. Requirements also include a valid driver's license, proof of auto insurance, binoculars, a strong work ethic, and enthusiasm for conducting fieldwork.
