Deliver a network of well managed (surfacing / signs) and connected cycle routes / trails in
Devon which:
-
support the delivery of new development through increased network capacity,
reduced traffic congestion, sustainable travel modes etc
support tourism, leisure growth and healthy active lifestyles as achieved by existing
trails such as the Exe Estuary Trail and South West Coast Path (the SWCP get ~ 8.6 million
visitors a year which is worth around £189 million to the area’s economy – making it Devon’s biggest and
most popular tourist attraction).
DCC has published (March, 2015) a Cycling and Multi-Use Trail Network Strategy which
sets out DCC’s priorities for a cycle and leisure route network. DCC has stated that it will
work to secure funding for these routes via a range of sources such as Growth Deal 3,
developer contributions (s106/CIL), possible bids to the Department for Transport. The
strategy recognises that there are other local priority routes which are not included.
This paper therefore focuses on routes and projects which are not identified in the DCC
strategy but which are being identified as a priority through District Green Infrastructure
Plans / Local Plans and the South West Coast Path team.
Geography &
costs
Routes/projects are currently being identified through District GI work / SW Coast Path
team and others – these could all be pulled together into one map if required.
They include (these are examples - others are being identified):
SW Coast Path - lots of possible projects!
Circular Walks – upgrading the most popular circular walks to increase visitor capacity /
reduce seasonality of tourism and increase spend away from the coast (work to be costed
by DCC PRoW team based on a sample of 10 routes provided by the SWCPA).
Cost – est £450,000 for 100 walks + £40,000 for 20 interp boards
Building resilience – upgrading drainage structures
Cost - £100K/yr for 3 years
Digital information provision – hidden views app
Information on history, farming, hidden views (underwater features / geology) etc
Cost: £35K for app development + £1K per walk = £135,000
Conservation and enhancement of 30 archaeological features
To follow up the success of Unlocking our Coastal Heritage.
Cost: £1million
Dogs on the path
Package of advice to dog owners etc
Cost: £150,000 over 3 years
Marketing and communication
Cost: £120,000 over 3 years
SWCP have other project ideas that could be included.
