Edf1126-information and computer technology in the classroom Amanda Coleman-22654208 Date: Year Level: grade 2-3 Lesson Duration 50-60mins Title of Lesson Literacy rotation activities – including interactive whiteboard activity Learning Outcomes and Specific Purpose The purpose of this activity is for students to use the interactive white board for a number of literacy activities on the topic of volcanoes. Links to AusVELS: Strand: Physical, Personal & Social Learning Domain: Interpersonal Development Dimension: Working In Teams Strand; Disciplinary Learning Domain: Science Dimension: Science Knowledge and Understanding Strand: Interdisciplinary Learning Domain: Information and Communications Technology Dimension: ICT for visual thinking Prerequisite knowledge/concept/skills/vocabulary required: For this lesson students will need basic fine motor skills to be able to use the interactive whiteboard, and basic knowledge of how to use the IWB. Some basic knowledge of volcanoes and their structure. Grouping/s and Physical Space: Students will begin the lesson as a whole group to introduce the lesson and discuss volcanoes, they will then split into smaller literacy groups. The IWB activity can be completed individually or as a group (per teacher’s wishes) in this circumstance the IWB activity is to be completed in small literacy groups. To conclude the lesson the students will come back together as a whole group for a debrief on what they have learnt in the lesson. Equipment/Resources required: Interactive Whiteboard Writing books Pencils Quiz Lesson Plan Template – EDF2323 Edf1126-information and computer technology in the classroom Amanda Coleman-22654208 Lesson Structure: Introduction: To being the lesson as a whole class we will review what the students know about volcanoes and the structure of a volcano. We will discuss what they are going to do in each of the literacy activities so that students are able to commence work immediately at each station. The stations will consist of one table doing a write up of the volcano eruption they made in science, one group on the IWB and another group doing a quiz about volcanoes and other natural disasters. Main component of lesson: Students will split into literacy groups as specified by the teacher. The literacy groups work on rotation so each group will have 10- 15 mins at a station. One group will work on writing up the experiment they did in science earlier that week, one group will be completing a quiz about volcanoes and the other working on the Interactive Whiteboard. The interactive whiteboard activity consists of students using the software to label areas on a diagram of a volcano, completing a match the work to its definition and also using a website that has been linked to the IWB activity to go and make their own simulation of a volcano eruption. The IWB lesson has been designed to get students to work together to complete the labelling task and matching game, and also working in decision making on the volcano designing website. The activity has also been designed to create optimum learning opportunities for students with disabilities or learning difficulties (Whitby, Leininger & Grillo, 2012). The interactive whiteboard provides large clear imagery for those who are visual learners, and provides the opportunity for students to all work together as a group to complete the activity. Conclusion: To conclude the lesson the students will all come back together as a group and discuss what they have learnt from the activities they have completed. Some students will be able to share their write up of the experiment they completed, with the rest of the class. Quizzes will be collect for grading to assess what the students know and what still needs more focus. Monitoring of Student Learning: Due to the nature of the lesson students working in groups to complete set activities, as a teacher I will be able to asses students learning at each activity. I will be able to rotate and move freely through the activity going where I am needed by the students and helping those that I feel need more assistance. Lesson Plan Template – EDF2323
