PILOT CLUB OF OCONEE COUNTY
COMMUNITY PROJECTS
The Pilot Club of Oconee County’s primary focus is promoting awareness of brain-related disorders and
disabilities through education, volunteerism, and financial support. We recently celebrated 32 years of
friendship and service. We are very committed and service oriented in giving back to the community and we
are able to provide the funds for these projects through our fundraisers.
Below are a few of the ways the Pilot Club of Oconee County has given back to the community to improve the
quality of life for others.

Present an educational program known as BrainMinders™ to elementary students ages pre-K and up.
This safety program teaches children how to protect their brain for life. Through use of animal hand
puppets, we demonstrate the importance of helmet safety, playground safety, seatbelt safety, crossing
the street safety, gun safety, kitchen safety, boating and swimming safety. We have a similar program
which we present to senior citizens on safety in and around their homes.

Grants from Pilot International and matching funds from the Pilot Club of Oconee County were used in
Oconee County to purchase the handicap playground equipment at Harris Shoals Park; the Oconee
County Pre-K Special Education Department received a computer and software programs; and Rocky
Branch Elementary School Special Education Department received software programs.

In 2005, the Pilot Club of Oconee County purchased two portable amplification systems. The systems
were given to the Special Education Department at Oconee County Middle School and Malcolm Bridge
Middle School. This system benefits teachers and students by providing voice enhancement and less
redirection for teachers and improves audible skills during class time.

The Oconee County Sheriff’s Department and Dispatch for 911 calls was one of the first in our area to
receive Project Lifesaver, a tracking device and transmitter bracelets to help locate wandering
individuals of all ages suffering from brain related disorders such as Alzheimer’s, Autism, or other
disabilities. It reduces the man hours spent by the Sheriff’s Department and Dispatch for 911 in
searching for these wanderers. It gives peace of mind to family members that everything possible is
being done to locate their loved one quickly. There are hundreds of Alzheimer patients living in Oconee
County today. We currently have four Oconee County residents wearing transmitter bracelets. Monthly
monitoring and battery replacement is provided by a member of the Pilot Club. Applications are
available through the Sheriff’s Department.

For the past several years the Helen Parrish Memorial Scholarship, in the amount of $1,500, has been
given to a graduating senior from Oconee County. This scholarship is now being given to a deserving
student from Oconee County attending Gainesville State College in Oconee County.

We have provided public seminars on Alzheimer’s, Disability Awareness, Health Issues-Aneurysms,
and classes for parents and teachers of autistic children.

Other service projects included sponsoring Extra Special People (ESP) through monetary support for
camp and by participating in their Big Hearts Pageant in February each year. We provide refreshments
and prizes at Mental Health America’s functions. We sponsor Oconee County Relay for Life and man
the Luminary Booth each year.

Each year we honor a community group such as the Law Enforcement staff, firemen, elected officials,
DFAC social workers, school principals and teachers, local ministers and rural mail carriers with an
“Appreciation Dinner”.
