Amy Seelbaugh Latin Teacher, SVMS 02/15/12 Latin Survey of Colleges and Universities Purpose: The purpose of this survey was to determine whether colleges and universities accept Latin as they would any other modern foreign language, how many years of foreign language study schools require and/or expect to see on applications, and whether they award credit and/or advanced placement for the AP Latin test. Method: Information on this chart is taken from phone interviews with admissions counselors and from college and university websites. Surveyed colleges and universities are, for the most part, public and private schools in Pennsylvania and some other major schools in the northeast area of the country. Overview of Findings: Latin is accepted just as any other foreign language. Every surveyed counselor stated that they do accept Latin as they would any other language for admission requirements. Three or more years of the same foreign language is expected. Most colleges and universities surveyed do have minimum requirements or expectations for world language when considering admission. Most larger and/or more prestigious colleges and universities expect to see three to four years of one language on a perspective student’s transcript. Taking the AP Latin course and test counts for college credit and/or advanced placement. Even schools that do not have a Latin or classics program consider AP Latin test scores for general elective, English, or foreign language credits. Three to six credits is the common award for scores of 3 or higher at almost every school surveyed. College/University Phone Number Accept Latin as a world language requirement?
