Introduction to the Perception-Action Approach to Physical Therapy Management
of Children with Movement Disorders
March 22-23, 2014
Sponsored by: All for Kids Pediatric Therapy, LLC
COURSE DESCRIPTION
Looking for a new perspective? Join this interactive workshop that introduces a specific type of manual guidance in
combination with environmental supports. Current theories, including the perception-action theory, dynamic systems
theory and theory of neuronal group selection, are presented as the basis for this intervention. The approach allows
active, spontaneous exploration of the child’s environment and promotes adaptability, variability, and complexity in
movement that are oriented to a functional task.
Lectures include patient videos and intervention examples to illustrate the theoretical underpinnings and primary
concepts of the approach. Lab sessions provide practical experience for the participants. Three patient
demonstrations are included to expand your knowledge and understanding of patient examination, evaluation, and
intervention consistent with Perception-Action Approach.
COURSE OBJECTIVES

INSTRUCTOR BIOGRAPHIES
Joyce Barnett, PT has practiced as a pediatric physical therapist for 39 years both in Washington State and Alaska.
She has worked in school settings and is currently in private practice. She has served as APTA Pediatric Section
state representative, on a Pediatric Section task force, as a board member for an agency benefiting adults with
disabilities, and as a Perception-Action study group facilitator. She served on the State of Alaska PT/OT Licensing
Board from 2008 to 2012. Ms. Barnett is certified in NDT Basic, Baby and Gait treatment and in TAMO therapy. Ms.
Barnett became a member of a TAMO instructor group and provided coursework to local therapists. Her interest in
the containerization of infants has led to lectures to local health care provider groups emphasizing prevention of
“Bucket Baby Syndrome,” (positional torticollis, plagiocephaly, and movement asymmetry). Recently, she
presented on Perception-Action Approach at national level.
Mary Pomeroy, PT has practiced as a pediatric PT for 41 years in a variety of settings and locations. She has
worked in the school systems in Michigan and Alaska and provided consultation out in villages in rural areas of AK.
In her early career she spent time in Africa, working in Kenya in polio clinics and in an out-patient hospital setting.
For the last 5 years she has volunteered in Malawi at an orphanage, providing positioning / handling guidance for
babies at an orphanage, as well as determining adaptive equipment needs for toddlers and school aged children in
surrounding villages. She provides teaching and training to the care givers in these settings. Currently she is state
representative for the APTA Pediatric Section. She served on the State Alaska PT/OT Licensing Board for 8 years, as
president of the Board for 2 years. She is certified in NDT Basic, Baby and Gait treatment and in TAMO therapy. She
has assisted teaching courses for local therapists, as a member of the TAMO instructor group. An ongoing focus is
mentoring therapists with the Perception-Action approach to treatment as it relates to ITW, Arthrogryposis CP or
other neuromuscular impairments. Recognition of the problem of containerization of babies has provided
opportunities for talks to Alaskan health care professionals, promoting awareness to prevent “Bucket Baby
Syndrome” (positional torticollis, plagiocephaly, and movement asymmetry).
Annette Leier, M.Ed., OTR/L has practiced as a pediatric occupational therapist for 33 years both in South Dakota
and Alaska. She has worked in early intervention, school settings and is currently in private practice. Annette is
certified in Interactive Metronome, NDT Basic, Baby and has Advanced NDT UE training. Annette is currently
working on certification in the AHA and Mini-AHA Assessments. Annette has taken the Introduction to P-A, Level 2,
and the Perception-Action Approach to the Therapy Management of Infants with Torticollis course by Barbara
Womack, PT, MA. She has been embracing the P-A Approach over the past 6 years and exploring its principles with
mild – moderate impairments. Annette participates in the P-A study group and has lead topics, as Bimanual Hand
skills and Impact on Play and Self Feeding.
