CME ESSENTIALS The workshop for anyone interested in learning the Fundamentals of Continuing Medical Education (CME) Friday, December 4, 2015 Children’s Hospital of Orange County Orange, CA This workshop is for you if you are the CME chair, coordinator, educator, manager of your organization’s CME program, or are involved in planning continuing education activities. The workshop will teach you the CME accreditation requirements and walk you through the fundamentals of designing educational activities and assessing their impact on improving competency, performance, and/or patient outcomes. You will learn the how to plan activities and evaluate both individual activities and your overall CME program. You will gain insight into: Compliance with the CME accreditation requirements Planning and evaluation your activities and CME program Management of commercial support and promotion Documentation required to demonstrate compliance Accreditation with Commendation Cultural and Linguistic Competency (CLC) Policy Enrollment is Limited! We limit enrollment in this workshop so we can offer an environment where attendees can easily learn from faculty and peers. Apply IMQ/CMA accreditation requirements when planning and evaluating CME activities 2. Use a planning process that identifies professional practice gaps (PPGs) and incorporates educational needs in terms of Knowledge, Competence or Performance that underlie the gaps 3. Assess available data and information sources that can be used to identify PPGs 4. Generate activities with expected results designed to change Competence, Performance or Patient Outcomes 5. Utilize evaluation tools that are effective in measuring change 6. Analyze data to determine changes in learners Competence, Performance or Patient Outcomes resulting from CME activities and for your overall CME program 7. Make decisions and document in compliance with the Standards of Commercial Supportsm (SCS) for disclosure information, resolving Conflict of Interests, and managing commercial support and promotions/exhibitors. 8. Identify CLC disparities related to gaps/needs of learners or their patient population and integrate CLC disparities into the planning of a CME activity Faculty JEFFREY MALLIN, MD, is an engaging instructor who will make CME requirements and processes easy to understand. Dr. Mallin practices pediatrics at Kaiser Permanente Downey Medical Center in Downey, California, where he was formerly Director of Medical Education for 10 years. He is a member of the Kaiser Permanente Southern California Region CME Committee. He is a CME surveyor for the Institute for Medical Quality / California Medical Association (IMQ /CMA) and serves as the primary faculty for the IMQ CME Essentials Workshops, as well as faculty at IMQ CME Provider Annual Conferences. From 2008 to 2014, he served as a member and as vice chair of the Accreditation Review Committee (ARC) of the Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education (ACCME). IMQ Staff JENA RESNER, MD is the CME Program Administrator at the Institute for Medical Quality (IMQ). Dr Resner is a former Board Certified practicing Pediatrician. She received her MD from Tulane University Medical School and completed Pediatric Residency at the University of California, San Francisco. She practiced in a variety of settings before taking a hiatus from medicine. Jena oversees daily operations of the CME program, working with providers to achieve and maintain accreditation and with planning and teaching CME education for providers and surveyor. She also works with the IMQ Committee on CME and serves as a co-liaison to the Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education (ACCME) and the American Medical Association (AMA) representing IMQ/CMA providers in California. EVA MELENDEZ is the CME Program Associate Administrator at the Institute for Medical Quality (IMQ). Eva worked for a large medical center in San Francisco for over 12 years where she worked in several departments. She was also a practice manager for a PM&R Specialist in San Francisco. Eva joined IMQ in June 2013 and is currently the Associate Administrator for the CME Program. She is the lead trainer on PARS, coordinates the CME Essentials Workshop, and manages accreditation logistics for CME Providers and surveyors.
