Job Description: Small Engine Mechanic
Overview
We are currently seeking a Small Engine Mechanic at the National Aeronautics and Space Administration's
(NASA) Michoud Assembly Facility (MAF) in New Orleans. MAF is a world-class manufacturing facility providing
vital support to NASA's space flight missions. MAF is also a multi-tenant facility that includes NASA, other
government agencies, and commercial tenants.
Responsibilities
Repairs fractional-horsepower gasoline engines used to power lawn-mowers, garden tractors, and similar
machines using hand tools. Locates causes of trouble, dismantles engines and examines parts for defects.
Replaces or repairs parts such as rings and bearings. Cleans and adjusts carburetor and magneto. Starts
repaired engines and listens to sounds to test performance.
Qualifications
Must maintain the appropriate certification where applicable. Must be able to work in a team atmosphere.
Must put forward a professional behavior that enhances productivity and promotes teamwork and
cooperation. For jobs requiring operation of motor vehicles, must maintain a valid driver’s license.
Physical Requirements
Must be able to tolerate exposure to elements (hot/cold weather, rain). Exposure to loud noise. Must have
sufficient mobility to perform duties associated with this position. May require lifting materials up to 50 lbs.
Will perform physical activities that require considerable use of your arms and legs and moving your whole
body, such as climbing, lifting, balancing, walking, stooping, and handling of materials.
Work Environment
Most work is performed outside. Travel between buildings at MAF is required and may bring exposure to loud
noise and potentially hazardous equipment.
Equipment and Machines
Equipment related to grounds maintenance including but not limited to hand tools such as shovels, rakes,
pruning saws, saws, hedge and brush trimmers, brooms, mops, sprayers, and axes. Powered equipment such
as walking type and/or riding mowers, tractors. Proper Personal Protective Equipment.
Attendance
Punctuality and regular attendance are necessary. Attendance is critical at all times. Must have ability to
work outside normal schedule and adjust schedule to meet peak periods when required.
Other Essential Functions
Must comply with all company policies and procedures. Emphasis should be given to established safety and
health requirements including but not limited to wearing Personal Protective Equipment and timely reporting
of accidents and mishaps. Requires the ability to interact professionally with employees, customers and
visitors. Must be able to provide clear, concise, and accurate communication, both verbally and in writing.
Must be able to work in a team atmosphere. Must put forward a professional behavior that enhances
productivity and promotes teamwork and cooperation. Grooming and dress must be appropriate for the
position and must not impose a safety risk/hazard to the employee or others. Must have a valid driver's
license. Your ability to retain on-site driving privileges where such privileges are necessary to obtain access
to the work-site and perform the tasks of the position for which you are being employed, as well as any
subsequent positions to which you may be assigned. Must be able to obtain and maintain a security
clearance, if required. Must be a U. S. Citizen.
