SPI 0807.9.3 Classify common substances as elements or compounds based on their symbols or formulas. SPI 0807.9.9 Use the periodic table to determine the properties of an element. SPI 0807.9.2 Identify the common outcome of all chemical changes. SPI 0807.9.10 Identify the reactants and products of a chemical reaction. I Can Statements : I realize atoms make up all matter. I can tell the difference between an element and a compound by symbols and formula. I can determine the properties of an element using the periodic table. I can tell the difference between a chemical and physical reaction. I can explain the one common outcome of all chemical reactions. I can explain the difference between reactants and products. Bellwork Review – Science Benchmark’s Most Missed Questions- Question #15 (5 min) “Accountable Talk” to include asking students to pick the correct answer, the most chosen incorrect answer, and what misunderstandings lead to students missing the chosen problems. Accountable Talk over BMMQ (5-7 min) Cumulative Chemistry test over all units up to and including Periodic Table unit. (Properties of Matter, Kinetic Molecular Theory, Atom Structure, and Elements) – Questions # 1-75 (80 minutes) Students will complete our cumulative Periodic Table Test which includes a writing prompt where students will have to cite information provided to them in text, in classroom discussion, and from prompt. Wednesday Bell work Review (Benchmark Most Missed Questions- Question #31, and #16 (10 minutes) Accountable “Duos” grading of a copy of the Cumulative Chemistry Test. (30 minutes) Chemical and Physical Reactions text introduction (20 minutes) Students will begin new unit “Physical and Chemical Reactions” (20 minutes) - Day #1 - Powerpoint Section over Compounds, and Physical and Chemical Reactions – Delivery of Day #1 Notes and diagrams TCAP Coach Book Lesson over Physical and Chemical Reactions (10 minutes) Brainpop video over Chemical and Physical Reactions Exit Ticket Textbook Reading Interactive Power point projection Video Supplement Scaffolding for Students Bell ringer over Benchmark Assessment’s most missed questions. “Accountable Talk” to include asking students to pick the correct answer, the most chosen incorrect answer, and what misunderstandings lead to students missing the chosen problems. “Accountable Duo” grading consists of a student who has performed marginally on the test being teamed up with a high-achieving student to grade an anonymous (teacher created) test paper. Students are expected to correct the incorrect answers and provide feedback on the test. This provides the students the opportunity to review the content once-more before moving into a new subject matter area. Students performing poorly will require remediation during designated tutoring times. Chemical and Physical Reactions Text assignment will require students to read and write explanations as to the difference between a physical and chemical reaction, as well correlate this to future lessons over Compounds, Mixtures, and Solutions. Interactive Power point delivery of new content - Compounds, and Physical and Chemical Reactions Brainpop Video over Compounds Brainpop Video over Physical and Chemical Reactions TCAP Coach Book lesson over Physical and Chemical Reactions if time permits.
