July 2013 The Junior News We started the Summer Term by Welcoming Miss Richardson into Yr. 2 Then the Astrodome Arrived … A highlight for the whole Junior School this term was a visit from the astrodome company. As classes entered the sports hall, they were amazed by the immense size of the inflatable bubble that had taken over most of the space. Entering into the bubble was like entering into the sky full of star constellations and background music. We learnt about many of the constellations in our sky as well as information about comets, meteors and asteroids. Following this the display on the bubble changed from the stars in the sky to being inside a high tech space craft preparing for lift off. We counted down, full of suspense, then-BLAST OFF! We were shooting up into the sky high above Earth and exiting the Earth’s atmosphere. Looking back Earth was a small speck covered mostly in blue seas and oceans. We travelled past our Moon and Mars, stopping briefly at each one to learn interesting facts and review Neil Armstrong’s famous first footsteps on the moon! We travelled far and wide past Jupiter and Saturn. We missed nearly being swallowed up by a black hole! As our trip came to an end we reminisced about all we had seen and learnt and what an incredible hour we had just had! Accelerated Reading……. Accelerated reading has been brilliant. I enjoy reading a lot more now and have read lots more books. I really look forward to finishing a book so that I can take the quiz at the end. Mum and Dad call me a ‘book worm’ now! By Charlotte Stupple Yr. 4 We love reading anytime, anywhere! This was our 1st year having horse riding as an after school activity. Thank you Mrs Laflin we have loved it! Yr. 2 Down at Harry’s Farm On Wednesday Year 2 were very lucky to visit Harry and his animals. As soon as we arrived we were greeted by their friendly puppy, all three feet tall of him! Mrs Martin started the trail by introducing us to Bianca the pig. We were able to see her different features and find out what she liked to eat. As it approached lunch time, we moved onto feeding the chickens, rabbits and guinea pigs. Sylvester the goose came to say ‘Hello’ with his fellow duck friends and we were even able to have a hold of the old and wise tortoise. Mrs Martin was kind enough to give us an interesting talk on each of the animals and then provided us with a delicious lunch outside. In the afternoon we had the opportunity to do some craft and used a selection of materials to create our own animal pictures. We would like to say a huge thank you to Mrs Martin who not only delivered a ‘funtastic’ day for everyone but also gave us our very own personalised aprons… it wouldn’t surprise me if she had planned the weather as well! Pre-Reception’s Yearly Report…. What a busy year we have had in Pre-Reception. Within a few weeks of starting school the children experienced a wealth of opportunities through our `healthy schools week` taking part in a variety of sports, eating and making healthy foods and learning about what contributes to a healthy lifestyle. We ended the week with a visit to Fowlmead Park where we had great fun broadening our gross motor skills and confronting any fears of height. We experienced all the season’s even snow! We grasped the opportunity to experiment by sledging, snowball fights and making snowmen. This led to a new found interest for the children so we decided to investigate ice and melting in a variety of fun ways. It was then time for our Christmas play ‘The Bossy King’ where we enjoyed playing the part of angels and sheep. Since Christmas we have had many highlights and visiting `China China` a Chinese restaurant for a meal to celebrate Chinese New Year was one of them. The children had great fun learning how to use the chopsticks. We then had a visit from Forest School leader Linda who spent the afternoon with the children to help them build houses for animals. The children have since visited the Discovery Garden and were most excited to find evidence of their homes being used by visiting animals. We then explored hibernating animals, which the children really enjoyed. Then spring had sprung and we had a great introduction to this when parent Mrs Warnock bought along three two day old lambs for the children to bottle feed. This was to spark a new interest and the beginning of learning about growing, new life and life cycles began. We investigated the lifecycle of a frog watching our tadpoles daily, made a wormery and we grew our own butterflies. I don’t know who was more excited the children or parents. They were observed daily for any changes and when finally butterflies began to emerge from their chrysalises, the children were delighted as we released them in the Discovery Garden. As the children’s interests grew we started to look at different kinds of minibeasts, finding out information and extending our bug hotel to attract more insects. We ended the year with a visit from the `The Bug Road Show` where the children held giant bugs and learnt about their life cycles. We then dressed up as bugs when we sang `the Ugly Bug Ball` during the school production `Bumblesnouts. Finally the whole of the early years had a garden party in the Discovery Garden to celebrate a great year before moving onto their next classes. The children made cakes, sandwiches and a fruit punch and wrote invitations to their families. This was a wonderful end to a delightful year. Mrs Mills Shadow Puppet Theatre On Wednesday 19th June, Year 3 spent the morning working on their shadow puppet theatre. In Mrs Richardson’s workshop we watched a variety of shadow puppet shows and learnt how to create our own light theatre, light effects and comical playscripts. Later we performed our plays, variations on The Three Billy Goats Gruff, to Miss Morley. It was a fantastic morning and we just can’t wait to explore our puppet making skills further and further! Years 1 & 2 visit wingham wild life park When Year 1 and 2 set off on our school outing on Thursday 20th June, little did we know it would turn out to be the wettest day of the summer! Nevertheless we had a thoroughly enjoyable day, learning all about the animals, their habitats and feeding habits. The children were brave and careful when handling a corn snake, a bearded dragon and a tarantula! Although all the talks from the keepers were very interesting indeed, our absolute favourite was when the penguin keeper chatted to us about his precious birds and we watched them feed. It was great fun to see them speeding through the water after the fish. Later we looked at the tigers and the rescue lions, before relaxing with an ice cream and doing a spot of shopping. Finally, we returned to school tired but happy to have had such a wonderful day out with the animals. Yr. 3 Learn How to Make Samosas On the 27th June Tyler’s mum came in and taught us how to make samosas. This is how we made them: First we washed our hands and cleaned the tables! Secondly, we put mincemeat into a bowl and mixed flour and water together. After, we got a piece of filo pastry each and folded it into a pocket. This is how we made a pocket: We folded it into a triangle and then folded it over again to make a pocket. ‘The BumbleSnouts Save the World’ End of Year Tea Party in the Discovery Garden Girls’ Sport Report It has been an eventful year for our Under 11 girls’ sports team due to the fact that we have so few Year 6 girls. Therefore our team has included many Year 5’s as well as a few Year 4’s and 3’s. The year began with hockey games throughout the Michaelmas term. We improved our tackling and passing skills as the term progressed, but unfortunately we began with defeats against St Faiths, St Lawrence and a narrow defeat to Northbourne Park. We concluded the season with a draw against St Lawrence. During the Lent term we attempted to play netball. However, the weather was against us and caused many of our matches to be cancelled. Our final match was a home match against St Lawrence and our improvements shone through as we won by a staggering 8-0. Our goal shooters, Amy and Victoria were on fire as was our centre, Elly. Our U9, comprising of Year 3’s and 4’s, also played against St Lawrence on this day (their first netball match as a team together.) Charlotte Stupple and Tyler Henderson scored some excellent goals, the final score was 6-3 to St Lawrence. However we look forward to seeing huge improvements as our U9 team grow together for the next year. This term was filled full of sports such as the tennis tournament. A team from Dover College including Frankie, Harvey, Tyler Henderson and Milly Wilford came 3rd on a wonderful sunny day. We took part in a lot of athletics, the highlight of which was a brilliant sports day, Well done to Elly Laflin and Amy Lynch for winning the Victrix Ludorum. Lucky for Christian we won the cup for our house. Well done for all who took part, your efforts helped your house. As well as athletics, we squeezed in rounders matches against St Edmund’s, St Faith’s and St Lawrence. Our U9’s played a very exciting match against St Lawrence, which ended with a draw of ten rounders each. Our U11 matches were played extremely well and all ended with very close scores. However, we weren’t successful with a win this term. Well done girls for all your efforts. Best of luck to next year’s Year 6’s. Boys’ Sport Report First of the season was football. It was going to be hard but we were going to give it a good go and beat some teams at the Spring Grove Tournament. The most memorable result was 8-0 thrashing of Kings Rochester and a 5-2 revenge victory over Spring Grove. After that it was rugby and we were definitely the best team for u11s & u9s. We smashed some teams and sometimes we lost but we were always the best team. Now it was cricket season. It was going to be good but we only had one game, because of the weather, which was a narrow defeat. The highlight of the sporting calendar was the defence of our swimming trophy in Folkestone. 26races, 20 victories with people swimming in older age groups. Awesome performance! I have enjoyed being sports captain and good luck to whoever is rewarded with this privilege next year! Heads of School’s Report Head Boy and Head Girl Report 2012/13 This year we have had a wide range of events which have been packed with both excitement and opportunities to learn. Firstly, Healthy Schools Week. This week was completely different. Lessons were out the window and so was the uniform! We had a variety of sporting activities which were fantastic! However, Fowlmead was the one that really sticks out in my mind and most probably yours too. We went on BMX ramps, cycled through the hills and got lost on the on the GPS navigation system .A really enjoyable week I think you would all agree. None of this would have happened without Mr.F’s help and organisation. In the first term Years 4, 5 and 6 took off to London by train to the National History Museum for a night. This extravaganza included exploring Kensington Palace, and having tea in the neat, extensive gardens. Some of the places have been transformed into interactive areas for children to learn about the past of the royal family. After a three course meal at Pizza Hut, we set off on foot to the Natural History Museum for the ‘Dinosnore’ experience, where we took part in several activities including a pitch black hunt for parts of a pretend dinosaur using rubbings. With Christmas upon us, it was time for another Christmas fete .There were a variety of different stalls which were all fantastic and fun .Thank you to Mrs.Heritage for helping us organise it. Shortly before Christmas the whole school went to London to see Scrooge at the New Victoria Theatre. This was a brilliant production of the Charles Dickens novel. At World Book day everyone arrived at school in their favourite book character costumes, even the teachers played a part, from Dorothy to Darth Vader. We all had a really good day. In January Years 3, 4, 5 and 6 took off to London to the O2 arena for the Young Voices concert, where we got to sing side by side with thousands of other children from around the country and some famous singers including Connie Talbot. This was a once in a lifetime opportunity and everyone thoroughly enjoyed themselves. Everyone went on various trips. Year 2 went to the Fresh Water Theatre and Year 3 went all dressed up in their World War 2 costumes to witness what life was like as an evacuee. Year 4 has been enjoying learning about the Roman invasion. Year 5 ‘s main project was designing and making their own cakes, and then had to write an advert with their persuasive skills. Year 6 looked at British History since 1950 with each of us taking on a different decade. This term Mr.F has introduced Accelerated Reader to us. We have to read lots of books in order to achieve our targets. If you do manage to do so you will be rewarded with prizes. I think I can say for the majority of us that this has really improved our reading and we would like to say a big thank you to Mr. F for making reading fun and rewarding. On the Close, this year’s summer fete was a massive success including many different stalls ranging from fur bowlers to penalty shoot outs. Thank you to Mrs. Heritage for organising this fun event. Sports day was an amazing achievement for Christian as they were crowned champions this year .Ryan won Victor Ludorum with Amy and I winning Victrix Ludorum. This year for me was one of the best. As a Year 6, I have matured and realised just how much I love and will miss Dover College. Congratulations to Mrs Groombridge to her new family. We wish every success to Miss Morley, Mia and Isabella on their new journey. We are sure that Dover College will miss all of them greatly. Coming up next term…… We have booked for Yrs. 1 – 6 to go to the Marlowe to see Joseph and the Amazing Technicolour Dream Coat on Thursday 19th September for the matinee performance. The cost of this will be £20 to include ticket, transport and an ice cream. We will be collecting consent forms etc at the beginning of next term. And finally we will miss you Miss Morley but welcome Mrs Donnelly !
