The post is based at Manchester Royal Infirmary and Royal Manchester Children’s Hospital.
Peripheral clinics are held at Salford Royal, Wigan Infirmary and Trafford General as well as day case operating. A full range of surgery is practiced including head and neck oncology, trauma and facial deformity & orthognathic surgery, salivary gland surgery, cleft lip and palate and temporomandibular joint surgery. An extensive amount of dentoalveolar surgery and implantology is also carried out. Manchester Royal and Salford Royal are designated major
Trauma Centres for Greater Manchester and Salford is the Regional Centre for Neurosurgery
All trainees are encouraged and supported in clinical settings, with the opportunity to tailor clinical experience to the specific educational requirements of the post holder, and to prepare audits ,posters & publications. There are outpatient clinics and operating lists to which the trainee will be required to attend. There will be an on call commitment, which will provide a wide exposure to many forms of facial trauma and emergencies. MRI is one of the major teaching hospitals in Manchester. It has an international reputation in both Research and the Delivery of Clinical Care. It lies in close proximity to the University of

Central Manchester Unit of Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery, this is a large academic unit in association with the University Dental Hospital of Manchester. Facilities at the MRI include an out-patient department, day-case unit, elective treatment unit including theatres and beds, main theatres, There is a surgical service for the medically compromised, and the unit is continuously
‘on take’ for all maxillofacial trauma from the districts of Central Manchester, Salford and
Trafford, Wigan and Leigh, with a combined population of over one million.
Each post comprises of a 1:8 rota, working Nights, Days and Night/Day Weekends and is
EWTD compliant.

Outpatient clinical suites, minor oral surgery, day case operating facilities, inpatient ward, inpatient operating facilities are based at Preston but the DCTs rotate to Chorley for outpatients and day case theatre sessions. These locations are approx15 miles apart.
Formal consultant led structured teaching programme – fortnightly.
Formal audit session monthly- participation actively encouraged.
Royal Preston is the regional trauma centre so we deal with a number of facial and cranio facial trauma cases.
The trainee will work in a well supported environment with their own minor oral surgery lists/clinics with access to GA cases as well .There are out-patient clinics to which the trainee will be required to attend .We can tailor the requirements of the trainee to help develop their area of interest. Encouragement is given towards research and active participation in clinical audit.
All on call is based at Royal Preston Hospital. No travelling is required oncall. Day time duties may be at any of the three sites

Essentially the rota works that you will be on call one evening per week (5pm – 8am) and one weekend in 5 (Saturday 8am through to Monday 8am). Non-resident means you do not have to stay at the hospital but be within easy reach of the hospital should you be called.
Accommodation can be arranged (chargeable) if requested through the accommodation office.
Hospital at night in place to deal with routine calls after hours and ward based problems.

Busy posts in three hospitals in a federated service in East Lancashire with exposure to oral surgery, oral medicine, orthodontics, restorative dentistry, all aspects of maxillofacial surgery, opportunities for audit and short research papers/projects, and the added benefit and experience of being on-call for dental and facial emergencies, and experience gained in dealing with patients who have medical co-morbidity. Duties include attending outpatient diagnostic clinics, MOS lists, operating lists, ward work and on-call duties, in a busy, friendly and supportive environment.
Outpatient clinics, operating theatres, ward work in three hospitals, and the emergency department in Blackburn.
Current post-holders work on-call without any overnight commitments. The rota is EWTD compliant.

The Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery unit is one of the busiest in the North West, catering for the full spectrum of our specialty curriculum. The appointees will work across all the clinical sites,

General Hospital, in the outpatient setting in all and the inpatient setting at North Manchester

The Regional Maxillofacial Unit provides a comprehensive service in Oral and Maxillofacial
Surgery to the residents of South Sefton and Liverpool and more broadly to Merseyside and
Cheshire as a whole.
The Regional Unit operates a ‘hub and spoke’ arrangement with other hospitals in the region.
Most major surgery is carried out centrally at the hub (Aintree) and numerous outpatient and minor surgery arrangements peripherally in the spoke hospitals. The case mix of the 14 OMFS consultants working in Aintree includes patients with facial deformity and craniofacial anomalies including cleft lip and palate. We have an internationally recognised head and neck cancer unit undertaking the full remit of resection and reconstruction including free flaps. We treat diseases of the salivary glands and temporomandibular joints. Trauma constitutes a large volume of our work running a Consultant of the Week system with a dedicated trauma team receiving patients from across the region served by the Regional MFU from as far south as Crewe to Warrington in the east and Ormskirk in the north.
In addition to 14 OMFS consultants there is one consultant orthodontist and one consultant in restorative dentistry, one staff grade surgeon and 8 specialty trainees.

There are 30 inpatient beds in the MFU. We are an accredited practice development unit (PDU) and encourage multi disciplinary working.
The DCT is responsible for the organisation of day to day management of the patients admitted under the care of the OMFS consultants under the supervision of the specialty trainees and consultants.
Out of hours coverage is provided by a “full shift” pattern of work involving 8 DCTs. These duties include night cover, ward duty, trauma cover (including a trauma clinic and theatre), consultant clinics, MOS sessions, day surgery and in patient operating lists.

The Maxillofacial and Orthodontic Unit provides services to the residents of the Wirral Peninsula across the Mersey River from Liverpool. Some trauma and major cases are transferred to The
Regional Unit at Aintree for surgery.
In Arrowe Park DCTs are exposed to dento-alveolar surgery, salivary gland surgery and surgery of facial deformity and facial trauma. OMFS have joint clinics with orthodontic, paedodontic and restorative dentistry specialists.
In addition to three consultants, the department is staffed by an associate specialist in OMFS and a specialty trainee in orthodontics and a ST in OMFS. The consultants based in Arrowe

The post combines duties in OMFS with Orthodontics. In theatre DCTs may assist consultants with more major cases and operate under supervision on other cases. There are also MOS sessions - routine oral surgical procedures under local anaesthetic and outpatient clinics. The
OMFS team are responsible for the admission, inpatient medical care and discharge of elective and emergency patients admitted under the care of the u nit’s consultants.
A six person rota is based at APH. The out of hours work by DCTs covers A&E and the ward is from 8am till 10pm. Outside these hours the “Hospital At Night” team and the on-call ST provide care.

Royal Liverpool and Broadgreen University Hospital NHS Trust
Liverpool University Dental Hospital (LUDH) is an integral part of the RLBUHT and forms one of the clinical directorates of the Trust. Located on the main teaching hospital campus alongside the Royal Liverpool University Hospital, Liverpool University Dental
Hospital (LUDH) occupies a self-contained modern building on Pembroke Place, originally constructed in the late 1960s. It has undergone a series of major refurbishments in recent years which have significantly extended and upgraded its surgeries, teaching clinics and patient waiting areas. A separate annexe houses the
Dental Nurse Training School.
The Hospital has approximately 160 dental units, including six 20-unit teaching clinics, consultation and teaching suites for all the dental specialties and its own dental technical and histopathology laboratories. The ground floor houses the Hospital’s
Accident & Emergency department, alongside surgeries for dental extractions minor oral surgery and a designated clinic for the treatment of medically compromised patients.
There is a well designed General Anaesthetic extractions surgery and recovery area and recently upgraded operating facilities for day case patients requiring treatment under general anaesthesia or intravenous sedation.
There are approximately 80,000 outpatient attendances per year, plus 15,900 selfreferrals through the A&E department. A team of over 25 full-time, part-time and honorary consultants receive secondary and tertiary referrals from throughout the area of the former Mersey Health Region and beyond, as well as participating in the training of dental undergraduates and junior staff. Specialist departments include Restorative
Dentistry (Fixed & Removable Prosthodontics, Endodontics, Periodontology), Paediatric
Dentistry, Orthodontics, Oral Surgery and Oral Medicine and a Consultant-led Dental
Sedation Unit.
There are strong links with the Regional Maxillofacial Unit at Aintree Hospitals Trust, a leading centre nationally for the treatment of oral cancer, all of whose consultants hold sessions in the Dental Hospital. The Regional Cleft Palate Unit, based at Alder Hey
Children’s Hospital, holds weekly joint sessions at the Dental Hospital.
The Liverpool University Dental Hospital also houses the School of Dentistry with which it is closely integrated and shares a common Mission Statement. The School admits over 90 undergraduate dental students each year and has an academic staff establishment of approximately 33 full time equivalents. Dental research is a major focus of activity within the School which provides excellent facilities for both clinical and laboratory based research with well-equipped laboratories housed in an adjacent building.

The appointee will be responsible to the Clinical Director of the Liverpool University
Dental Hospital and the Postgraduate Dental Dean (HENW).
The DCT 3 in oral medicine will be based within the Department of Oral Medicine under the direct supervision of one or more of the team of consultants and honorary consultants working within the Liverpool Dental Hospital. The post holder will attend consultant clinics with designated consultants and biopsy sessions, again treating patients under consultant supervision. The post holder will gain experience of all aspects of oral medicine including attendance at the specialised clinics for facial pain; dry mouth and dysplasia.
The post holder will be expected to participate in clinical audit. The post holder will be expected to engage in their own continuing professional development and attend any organised CME sessions.
The post holder will be required to continue to complete a training portfolio, including a personal development plan, log of activity and a learning needs analysis. This will need to be presented to the designated Educational Supervisor who will be supervising the post holder’s training during this year. Opportunities for further study, audit and possibly research will be made available. There may be the requirement from time-to-time to supervise Dental Undergraduates treating patients in the Department of Oral Medicine
There exists already within the Dental School a CME programme and there are regional audit days, which will be available for the post holder to attend as appropriate.
A review of training will take place at designated times during the year and will be similar to the ARCP process for Specialty Registrars.

There may be the requirement from time-to-time to supervise Dental Undergraduates treating patients in the Department of Oral Surgery. The post holder will gain experience of all aspects of oral surgery.
The post holder will be required to continue to complete a training portfolio, including a personal development plan, log of activity and a learning needs analysis. This will need to be presented to the designated Educational Supervisor who will be supervising the post holder’s training during this year. The Paediatric Dentistry Department is responsible for specialist paediatric dental services. The clinic space is shared with Orthodontics and has recently undergone major refurbishment work. There are 10 dental chairs and one side surgery.
The Unit provides specialist endodontic treatment with access to specialized equipment including endodontic microscopes. Inhalation sedation and intravenous sedation is undertaken in the sedation suite, which consists of three dental units. Currently the intravenous sedation is delivered by an anaesthetist, with the dentist as the operator.
The department provides routine care for children as part of the undergraduate BDS, and Hygiene and Therapy programmes.

The post holder will attend consultant clinics with designated consultants and also be allocated treatment sessions, again treating patients under consultant supervision. Nursing support will be available for those treatment sessions. There may be the requirement from time-to-time to supervise Dental Undergraduates treating patients in the Department of Restorative
Dentistry. There may also be the opportunity to work with the Consultant in the unit of
Special Care Dentistry to gain additional experience in this field. The post holder will gain experience of most aspects of restorative dentistry including endodontics, periodontology and removable and fixed prosthodontics.
The post holder will be required to continue to complete a training portfolio, including a personal development plan, log of activity and a learning needs analysis. This will need to be presented to the designated Educational Supervisor who will be supervising the post holder’s training during this year. The 2 post holders will work across clinics in Liverpool University Dental Hospital,
Community Dental Clinics in Merseyside (part of Bridgewater Community Trust) and
Dental Public Health (Public Health England, Cheshire and Merseyside Centre)
The NHS ‘Mersey Region’ is a region with a population of 2.4 million. Merseyside itself consists of five Metropolitan Boroughs, the largest being the City of Liverpool. The
Liverpool population is served mainly by the Royal Liverpool and Broadgreen University
Hospitals, Alder Hey Hospital and the Women’s Hospital. The Sefton population is served by two main hospital complexes namely, Aintree Hospitals serving South Sefton, and Southport & Formby District General Hospital serving the North.
The Community Dental Services provided by Bridgewater Community Trust in
Merseyside include a number of senior clinicians and Specialists in Special Care
Dentistry working from several multi-surgery facilities equipped to provide dental care under intravenous and inhalation sedation. The service is experienced in providing a training base for clinicians at different stages in their careers. It is likely that the DCT placements will be located in clinics in St Helens and Widnes. Dental care under GA is provided within local hospital facilities both for children and adults. There are opportunities to practice in a range of settings depending on your experience and interest. For example with children, adults with special needs, frail older people, providing dental services under sedation, providing care for homeless or drug users or within the local secure units.

The post holder will work in the Special Care Dentistry Department of the Liverpool
University Dental Hospital for the equivalent of 6 months.
The post holder will work with senior clinicians in the Community Dental Service providing a broad range of special care dental care in primary care and community settings for the equivalent of 6 months.

Undertake domiciliary visits in a variety of community settings when necessary

Undertake dental public health projects relevant to the development and provision of special care dentistry in Cheshire and Merseyside.
