Enrichment Program
Lunch Clubs, Spring 2013!
Spring (and Summer!) is in the air and a new session of lunch clubs is on the way!
Janney Lunch Clubs provide a way for our students in Grades K-5 to discover new
interests, develop old ones and connect with a variety of peers and adults in a setting
beyond the traditional classroom experience. Students have the opportunity to develop
new, cross-cultural and cross-age relationships while trying out things they may not
otherwise choose to do.
The next clubs session runs from April 29th to June 14th. Please take the time to read the
following information and review club options with your child/ren. It will make the registration
process much more straightforward for both you and for your child(ren).
Joining a lunch club is a commitment made by students based on their own interests and choice,
and students are expected to attend their chosen club for the whole session. 5th Grade are
expected to commit to (and attend!) a club at least 2 out of the 3 sessions.
Preparation:
Clubs are optional for all children in grades K-4; 5th grade students are required to be in a club
for at least 2 out of the 3 club sessions over the course of the school year. Joining a lunch club
is a commitment both for the club leader and the student members. And please encourage your
student/s to look at the clubs on offer and ask the club leader or Pippa Trench for information if
they are interested in specific clubs or would like to know more.
For students who want to be in a club, we recommend a student identify two choices so there is
a greater chance of them getting a place.
Club sign-up:
Sign up will take place at lunchtime on Monday and Tuesday, April 22nd and 23rd.
During lunch, students are invited to sign-up by class and grade. They are given a “preferred
choice” neon-colored label to use for the club they would most like to be in, as well as a white
sticker for their second choice.
Students who request two clubs will usually get into at least one of their choices, unless demand
for both clubs is very high. If a student only requests one club, he or she may not end up being
in a club.
Lottery:
At the conclusion of sign ups, a lottery will take place for any club with more registrants than
space available.
Students who do not get into any of their chosen clubs will have first priority in the next session.
Final club lists will be posted in the atrium and outside the cafeteria on Friday April 26th.
Year Long Clubs
A number of clubs are year-long commitments. These include: Recycling; Jaguar Journal;
Peer Mediators; Student Council; Embassy Adoption Club and Recess Leaders. These
year long clubs are not open to sign up for the rest of this year and current members are
expected to continue their commitment to these clubs through to the end of the school year.
Free the Children club is a year-long club and we are happy to welcome new members.
Please contact Pippa Trench at janneyenrichment@gmail.com if you have any questions.
Clubs are described below by grade range – a complete schedule is also available online at
http://janneyschool.org/beyond/clubs/.
Grades K-1
Students in K-1 who are interested in joining a club have extra help during club sign up. It is
helpful if they have heard about the different clubs available to them. K-1 clubs run from 11:4512:30. Students who have hot lunch collect their lunch from the cafeteria at 11:45 and bring it to
the club to eat together with their fellow members at the start of the club. Members of these

cannot guarantee a place for every student that signs up.

YEAR ROUND CLUBS AND COMMITTEES.
Some of our clubs are commitments that students make at the beginning of the year or
semester, that continue through until the end of the school year. These must take priority when a
student is choosing which clubs to sign up for this session.
Recess Leaders (A-Day) – Mr. Bryan Librizzi and Mr. Jason Jones
Recess Leaders are volunteers who help with setting up and clearing recess equipment;
determining what activities are offered at recess; and leading and monitoring activities. A
significant role played by Recess Leaders is that of “peer mediators” for recess activities, helping
to ensure everyone has a safe, enjoyable, inclusive lunchtime recess experience. Of course,
staff is always on hand to monitor recess activities and to step in when Recess Leaders need or
ask for support. There are no more sign
Peer Mediators (A Day) – Ms. Maureen Leventhal
Peer mediation is now offered in every public school in the District. Two students from every 4th
and 5th grade classroom are trained how to mediate a problem without taking sides or making
the situation worse. (Students are recommended by their teacher and then approved by the
parents and the principal). The training takes place over the course of three days at the
beginning of the year. The purpose of peer mediation is to assist students in solving their own
problems so they do not always have to go to an adult. The mediators follow a script; mediation
is done confidentially. No one else sees the papers or notes. The solution is a written
agreement between the disputants. The mediator follows through making sure the disputants
keep the agreement. If they don’t follow through or the situation worsens then it is handed over
to the principal and the solution is decided by an adult.
Jaguar Journal (D-Day) – Ms Linda Sell, Ms Julie Schwartz, Ms Penina
Freedenberg, Mr Stefan Fatsis
The Jaguar Journal is a year long club and a year long commitment. There will be no new signup for Jaguar Journal this year.
Student Council (F-Day) – Ms. Mary Osterman & Ms Jackie Seward
The Student Council includes representatives from grades 1 through 5 plus officers elected by
students in grades 4 and 5. The students also elect a student representative to the School
Improvement Team. The Student Council provides leadership and representation from the
students and organizes a range of activities, including community service.
Recycle Committee – Grades 1 -5 (Friday) – Ms. Shana Zallman
Recycling committee is a perfect model of our school value of respect for our environment caring for each other and our school! The recycling team meets every Friday throughout the
school year and collects and sorts all the recycling in the school before delivering it to the
recycling dumpster for collection. Recycling will stay on Fridays rather than a letter day because
the dumpster is collected every Thursday. Signing up to this committee is a year-long
commitment and recognized as an important community service with small celebrations
throughout the year and recognition at Awards day at the end of the year. Students who sign up
for recycling may join a second club but will have to miss that second club when it falls on a
Friday.
Students in recycling may join a second club but will have to miss that second club when it falls
on a Friday. Students in 1st grade who are members of recycling should eat lunch with their
peers in the cafeteria and come to the atrium at 12:15.
