About 30 people participated in the PROWAD regional workshop in Denmark on the 10
September 2013 held at the National Park. The participants represented the tourism sector, the
National Park, the authorities and NGO’s. The workshop witnessed visitor manager Sally King
(Jurassic Coast Team, UK) give an inspiring presentation on experiences from Jurassic Coast on
stakeholder engagement and management as inspiration for the following workshop on the
Strategy for Sustainable Tourism in the Wadden Sea.
The head of the tourism organization on Fanoe, Poul Therkelsen, gave his view on the
connection between the newly adopted Tourism Strategy Destination Southwest Jutland and the
proposed Trilateral Strategy for Sustainable Tourism. Four groups discussed the strategy and the
action plan and agreed that this were a starting point for further development. Generally there
was a wide acceptance of the need for a common trilateral strategy on sustainable tourism in the
Wadden Sea World Heritage Destination and for a collaborative effort.
The summary record of the Danish workshop is attached to this note.
Proposal
The meeting is proposed to discuss the results of the Danish workshop.

WRITTEN COMMENTS AND OUTCOME OF DANISH WORKSHOP ON THE DRAFT STRATEGY
FOR SUSTAINABLE TOURISM IN THE WADDEN SEA – WORLD HERITAGE DESTINATION
Consultation period
A Danish version of the draft strategy for Sustainable Tourism in the Wadden Sea – World
Heritage Destination was distributed to stakeholders for consultation in the period from 26th of
July till 30th of August. A total of 4 hearing statements were received from:
1. The Danish Ornithological Society
2. Esbjerg Municipality
3. Destination Southwest Jutland
4. The Danish Wadden Sea Interpreter Forum
The hearing statements are part of the summary of results referred below
Danish Workshop on the draft strategy for Sustainable Tourism – 10th of September 2013
30 workshop participants representing the tourism sector, the national park, national and local
authorities and NGOs participated in the PROWAD regional workshop on the draft strategy for
Sustainable Tourism in the Wadden Sea – World Heritage Destination.
The participants witnessed Sally King, Visitor Manager from the Jurassic Coast giving a very
inspiring presentation on experiences and lessons learnt from the development of the Jurassic
Coast world heritage site with emphasis on stakeholder involvement and management as
inspiration for the ensuing discussions.
Poul Therkelsen, Head of the Tourism organization on Fanoe gave his view on the connections
between the newly adopted Tourism Strategy for Destination Southwest Jutland and the draft
Trilateral Strategy for Sustainable Tourism.
The participants then worked in four separate groups that each provided their views on one of
the four strategic objectives. Group inputs were presented and discussed and summarized
before closing the workshop.
Summary of results
Generally there is a wide acceptance of the need for a common trilateral strategy on sustainable
tourism in the Wadden Sea World Heritage Destination. To ensure the further development of
the strategy and secure crucial stakeholder involvement it is proposed to:
1. Emphasize that the implementation of the strategy is founded on the existing efforts at
the local and regional level and that trilateral efforts will focus on developing overall key
messages and common guidelines for communication and marketing. Efforts at the
Trilateral level can furthermore serve as a hub for compilation of lessons learnt,

exchange of ideas and possible joint projects. General issues such as training of front
desk personnel, quality standards, transport, planning of local/regional meetings etc.
should be left at the local, regional and national level.
2. The interpretation of “sustainability” should be made more clear and tangible.
3. The report should be made considerably clearer and shorter in a language of the
tourism sector.
4. The Action Plan should not be a formal part of the strategy to be signed at the
Ministerial Conference. The present draft should be shortened considerably, prioritized
and responsibility for implementation should be clarified.
