Workshop discussion topics will include ADA laws and published standards, guidance on accessible route components including: sidewalks, curb ramps, detectable warnings, and pedestrian controls at signalized intersections and MUTCD Work Zone requirements for pedestrian routes. During the workshop we will view pictures of ADA features to see real life examples of the good, the bad and the ugly ADA installations. Plans are to once again include the very popular walking and rolling field trip in the afternoon session to examine ADA features in the nearby downtown area. Participants will determine the level of compliance that exists and discuss what is needed to improve the design and construction of those areas to achieve full ADA compliance. Time: 9:00 am - 4:00 pm Workshop Limit: 50 participants Workshop 2 : Highway Safety Manual Workshop -- Getting Serious about Safety The first edition of AASHTO’s Highway Safety Manual (HSM) represents new methods for analyzing safety. The purpose of the HSM is to provide the best factual information and tools in a useful form to facilitate roadway planning, design, operations, and maintenance decisions based on explicit consideration of their safety consequences. The HSM uses analytical tools for predicting the impact of roadway planning, design, operations and maintenance decisions on road safety. The HSM is already being implemented by DOTs around the nation. There are 13 lead states (including Missouri) and 8 support states identified for their proactive use of the HSM. This workshop will give an overview of the HSM, with a focus on Part C—The Predictive Method. Time: 9:00 am - 12:00 pm Workshop Limit: 50 participants Workshop 3: Systems Engineering for Intelligent Transportation Systems "This workshop is intended to introduce you to systems engineering and provide a basic understanding of how it can be applied to planning, designing, and implementing intelligent transportation systems (ITS) projects. The workshop will lead you step by step through the project life cycle and describe the systems engineering approach at each step. It will describe how to begin implementing the systems engineering approach on your next ITS project and incorporate it more broadly into your organization's business processes and practices. This workshop is designed for ITS project managers, system owners, operators, maintainers, and anyone else in need of a quick, approachable primer on the basics of systems engineering for ITS." Time: 9:00 am - 12:00 pm Workshop Limit: 50 participants Workshop 5: Workforce Diversity Assessing Your Collateral Load This is a 3 hour interactive workshop designed for individuals interested in increasing their intercultural awareness. It is structured to promote greater understanding across differences such as race, ethnicity, gender, and class. Through film, discussions, and activities, this workshop aims to expand participants’ consciousness of costs associated with housing stereotypes and harmful biases, as well as techniques to “lighten the collateral load.” Objectives: 1. Participants will learn terminology related to diversity and inclusion 2. Participants will increase personal awareness of the impact of social differences. 3. Participants will learn to identify microaggressions. 4. Participants will learn skills to combat and dismantle harmful stereotypes and microaggressions. Time: 9:00 am - 12:00 pm Workshop Limit: 50 participants Workshop 6: Innovative Contract Delivery Methods The Missouri Department of Transportation uses several innovative contracting techniques to improve efficiency, increase flexibility and maximize value for our customers. In this workshop, MoDOT will present the basics of several innovative contracting techniques including Flexible Schedules, Add Alternates, Incentive/Disincentive, Alternate Technical Concepts and Design-Build. An hour of the workshop will be dedicated to a panel style-discussion with experienced contractors and owners debating the pros & cons of these contracting methods. Take this opportunity to see how government agencies large and small can maximize their budget to get infrastructure built! Time:1:00 pm - 4:00 pm Workshop Limit: 50 participants Workshop 8: Road Safety Audits Road Safety Audits are a great tool for evaluating signals, roadways, and intersections considered to be unsafe, confusing or that have unusual traffic patterns or accident history. By gathering a team of concerned stakeholders from the community, law enforcement, and the owner (city, county, or state), an evaluation can be made. Craig Allred, from FHWA will share some tips and guidelines from his 2 day course. Also presenting will be representatives from the 3 Regional Planning Groups in the NW District, whom have won 2 awards for their development of a RSA procedure. They will share highlights from the 6 RSA's completed so far, including lessons learned. The final 30 minutes of this workshop will focus on how the NW District reviews the RSA's after their completion. Included in this process is determining what actions to take and documentation back to the host RPC for inclusion in the final report. This workshop provides a comprehensive overview and allows the participant an opportunity to talk with many individuals who have completed these audits. Time:1:00 pm - 4:00 pm Workshop Limit: 50 participants Workshop 9: Virtual Design & Construction - More than 3D Modeling We live in a 3D world. We experience our lives in 3D - from movies to video games. So why limit transportation improvement projects to a 2D plan-centric workflow? This workshop will present participants an overview of Virtual Design & Construction methodology and the potential benefits and opportunities for innovation. The workshop will discuss a traditional project workflow using Virtual Design & Construction methods, MoDOT’s journey to this new methodology, growing pains with implementation, lessons learned & associated cost. Take this opportunity to learn how Virtual Design & Construction can be used to facilitate intensive project development team collaboration, conduct technical analysis and identify potential conflicts to reduce change orders in the field. This is a technical presentation designed for project designers and construction inspectors as well as any staff involved with core team technical analysis and value engineering. Time:1:00 pm - 4:00 pm Workshop Limit: 50 participants Tours Tour A: Metro Transit Facilities--FULL Ever wonder how Metro keeps people moving? Now is your chance to find out. This tour will allow you to get a peek behind-the-scenes at Metro’s transit operations and maintenance. The tour will take you to the downtown maintenance facility for MetroLink to see where and how trains are serviced and then on to a major MetroBus hub, where critical operations come together. Come see the daily challenges faced by St. Louis Metro Transit as they seek to provide a valuable transportation mode for the Bi-state St. Louis Region. Time: 9:00 am - 12:00 pm Workshop Limit: 12 Tour B: Spirit Airport and Boone Bridge--FULL Have you always wanted a behind-the-scenes look at an Airport? You don't need a plane ticket to get to know the airport better! The Spirit of St. Louis Airport tour will put you right at the heart of the action. 60 minutes in the middle of the action. Airport staff will take your airport tour on a behind the scenes look at the 3rd busiest airport in Missouri. After leaving the public area and passing through security screening, the 5 mile route will cover a visit to our largest Airport FBO's ramp and terminal, Visit the St. Louis Metro Air Support Facility, then we will look at both runways and taxiway system, and the newly built Aircraft Ground Run-up Enclosure (GRE). Time: 1:00 pm - 4:00 pm Workshop Limit: 12 Tour D: Downtown Bridges: Spanning the Ages--FULL Take a walk through history and a glimpse into the future with this tour that includes the historically significant Eads Bridge as well as the new Mississippi River Bridge under construction. The tour will start at the hotel with presentations about each structure. Eads Bridge was completed in 1874 as the second span over the Mississippi. The construction of Eads involved numerous challenges that gave rise to new and innovative construction techniques and resulted in a resilient landmark that changed the face of St. Louis. One-hundred forty years later, the new Mississippi River Bridge is scheduled to open to traffic in 2014. This cable-stayed structure aims to become a modern icon for the St. Louis region as it carries I-70 traffic across the river north of its current crossing and relieves traffic across the Poplar Street Bridge. MoDOT staff will be required to follow the MoDOT PPE policy. All other attendees will be required to wear hard hats, closed toe shoes and long pants. A hard hat will be provided if needed.
