Miss Mullahy & Mrs. Galipeau May 20, 2013 We are having a great time in kindergarten! The kids are learning so much and it is amazing to see how far they have all come since September! We are just about finished with our unit on plants and have begun to talk about insects. This week, Mrs. Baker will visit our classroom a couple of times to read some of our insect books to us! We are very excited for our guest reader! Last week we learned all about plants and what they need to survive and grow. We also discussed the life cycle of plants as well as plant parts. We read many wonderful picture books to help us learn about plants. We reviewed living and nonliving things by reading, What’s Alive? Later we read, A Tree is a Plant. The following day we read, Johnny Appleseed. Many of the kids had heard of Johnny Appleseed but never knew his significance in helping to plant apple trees across the country. Flip, Float, Fly: Seeds on the Move, helped us review all of the many ways that seeds can travel with the help of water, wind, or animals. Plant a Little Seed, What do roots do? and, Bob and Otto, all discussed the relationship between plants, animals, and insects. We also learned how plants provide food, shelter, and oxygen. Bob and Otto, gave us an opportunity to discuss earth worms and their significance in helping to provide trees with healthy soil and water. Jam and Honey, further discussed the interconnectedness of plants and animals. We had a busy but fun week learning all about plants and adding a plant mini book to our book basket! We even got a chance to compare, Jack and the Beanstalk, to, Kate and the Beanstalk! Lastly, the book, Dandelion Seeds, set us up for our unit on insects, as it focused more on the part that insects play in the pollination of plants. Last week we focused on consonant blends (i.e. sl, fr, gl, gr ch, tr, dr). We played matching games during centers with consonant blends, syllables and with math. The kids are learning about ten frames and how to add on to ten. They did a great job understanding place value and using unifix cubes to practice adding tens and ones. We also focused on shapes. After reviewing all of our 2D shapes, we learned about 3D shapes and discussed where we can find 3D shapes in our everyday lives! BrainPop also had some great math videos for us to watch! Our very last travelling book is making its way around the classroom. Please be sure to send it back in the next day so that everyone gets a chance to see it before the year is over. Thank you! Also, if your child has a summer birthday and you would like us to celebrate it in the classroom before June 14th, please let me know!
