* The letters c and g are pronounced differently, depending on the vowel that follows.
The letter c followed by a , o , or u would be pronounced with a “ k ” sound. However, the letter c followed by an i or e is pronounced with an “ s ”. Similarly, a g followed by the letters a , o , or u would be pronounced with a g sound as in “ goat ”. A g followed by the letters i or e is pronounced like the h as in “hill”.

In 2010 the Spanish Royal Academy approved dropping two letters from the Spanish.
This change reduced the number of letters from 29 to 27.

The letter combination CH and LL conventionally considered unique letters in the
Spanish alphabet were dropped; however, they will keep their pronunciation but lose their distinctive place in the Spanish alphabet and in dictionaries. With this adjustment, words beginning with CH will be incorporated in alphabetical order between the words starting with C .

Although CH , LL have been dropped from the Spanish alphabet, dictionaries and glossaries published before 1994 will continue to show them as separate entries.

Another approved set of changes altered the pronunciation of the letter V from “ VE ” to “ UVE ”, which is already common practice in many areas, and the letter Y will be pronounced as YE along with the old-style name of “ I GRIEGA ”.

The Spanish Royal Academy also decided to change the " Q " on some words with the letter " C " or " K ", depending on the case. Thus, " Iraq " will be spelled " Irak ", and
" Qatar " will be written " Catar ". Those who prefer to write these words in the old manner must do so as if they were foreign words.

Finally, the prefix " EX " would be considered a prefix that can be attached to words such as “ ex-dictador ”, consequently becoming " exdictador ". Still, if “ EX ” refers to a two-or-more-word phrase, it would be utilized in the traditional format – “ ex-ministro de educacion ”.

The sound that represents the digraph RR is the same as that represented by the letter R.
The letter combination RR is not always considered a separate letter, but it is a unique sound in Spanish.
Remember: The Spanish alphabet, with 27 letters, is the same as the English alphabet with the addition of the Ñ .
