Mental Health Myth or Fact 1: If you think you or someone you know may have a mental or emotional problem, it is important to remember there is hope and help. Myth Fact 2: Poor performance in school could be a symptom of depression Myth Fact 3: People with depression are always sad. Myth Fact 4: Depression can be a deadly illness. Myth Fact 5: Obsession with death is a warning sign of a mental illness. Myth Fact 6: Warning signs such as; substance abuse, frequent outburst of anger, Prolonged negative mood, often accompanied by poor appetite or thoughts of death, Prolonged depression (sadness or irritability), Social withdrawal, don’t need to be taken seriously. Myth Fact 7: Anxiety is the most common mental illness in America. Myth Fact 8: There are more than 200 classified forms of mental illness. Myth Fact 9: Anxiety disorders don’t coexist with other mental illnesses. Myth Fact 10: Cognitive-behavior therapy is; understanding thinking patterns Myth Fact 11: Adolescent depression is decreasing. Myth Fact (Adolescent depression is increasing at an alarming rate) 12: Suicide is the 3rd leading cause of death in young adults. Myth Fact 13: Family and Friends cannot help with someone’s mental health. Myth Fact 14: Females are twice as likely to be diagnosed with ADHD as Males.
