The African Medical and Research Foundation (AMREF) is Africa’s leading health development organisation

Kenya, Tanzania, Uganda, Ethiopia, and South Sudan, as well as a hub for South Africa.
AMREF UK supports AMREF in Africa to achieve its strategic goals and is composed of 3 departments:
Fundraising and Communications, Programmes and Advocacy and Finance and Administration functions.
AMREF UK’s Fundraising and Communications team exists to:
1) Raise income to support the work of AMREF UK and the work of AMREF in Africa
2) Raise the profile of AMREF as a unique African Organisation and our work in Africa to the UK public and key
identified audiences where we have best synergy for maximum impact
3) Work across the One AMREF global structure to ensure that all opportunities are maximised, learning
shared, and we play to our strengths in order to have greatest impact for the people of Africa whom AMREF
exists to serve.
AMREF UK’s Big Gifts Strategy:
The Philanthropy and Partnerships sub-team at AMREF UK is a key part of the Fundraising and
Communications team and has a high profile and level of responsibility. The Trusts & MajorDonor Fundraiser
will generate new income through researching, approaching and cultivating relationships with new trust and

income for AMREF. This role will be key in cross-team working between the Fundraising and Communications
Team and Programmes and Advocacy Team and will work closely with the Programme Officers and
Programme Managers in evaluating opportunities and ensuring funders receive excellent stewardship at all
points in the project and grant management cycle.
AMREF UK has a strong track record of successful big gift generation particularly from corporates and trusts
and foundations, but we need to do more. AMREF, as Africa’s leading health NGO, has an ambitious business
plan based on the huge need across Africa for AMREF’s expertise and approach to delivering health solutions
that work and are sustainable. As such AMREF UK needs to raise the profile of AMREF to UK-based funders
and key stakeholders and deliver more income to Africa to meet this need.
There are many prospects identified and AMREF has a strong story to tell as well as impactful, innovative
projects across Africa, so there is great potential for an ambitious candidate to deliver significant success. The
role demands a planned and proactive approach in order to identify and prioritise leads. It also a strong ability
to network and generate leads, requires excellent communications skills, outstanding attention to detail, the
ability to prioritise a varied workload and a strategic view of the donor journey. AMREF is a complex
organisation and the postholder needs to have a high level of creativity, resilience, and confidence, have a
strong sector awareness across all the key areas of responsibility and, ideally an understanding of African
health issues, and know how to translate that knowledge into a strategy for AMREF UK.
