PROGRAM FUNCTION:
The Community Services division includes Fire Protection, Enforcement,
Parks & Recreation, Agriculture services and Family & Community Support Services for
the County of Grande Prairie No. 1.
The FCSS department provides social services to the residents of the County. Programs
will be directed towards seniors, children, youth, families and volunteers to promote their
social and emotional well-being. FCSS also oversees the operations of the County of
Grande Prairie Library Board and the library staff at the three library sites: Elmworth,
LaGlace and Valhalla.
PURPOSE OF JOB:
The Library Assistant is responsible for providing library and research services for the
County of Grande Prairie and maintenance of the library and its collections in the
absence of the Library Coordinator. In addition the Library Assistant provides adequate
services ensuring that materials are current and accessible, and available to library
users when required. The Assistant takes direction from the Library Coordinator on site
but is under the supervision of the FCSS Director.
Job Duties and Tasks:
1. Assist the Library Coordinator to provide effective access to library collections
and resources.
 Maintain collections management policies and procedures.
 Perform original cataloguing and classification of print, audio-visual and
electronic resources.
 Maintain special indexing systems and files for special collections.

2. Assist with the organization of library materials.









Ensure efficient retrieval by users.
Maintain cataloguing procedures.
Distribute materials for cataloguing.
Determine the type of cataloguing required.
Enter cataloguing data into the library’s automated system.
Process resources for placement on shelf.
File cards in shelf list.
Complete cataloguing records where only partial copy is available.
Index materials for the pamphlet collection.
3. Assist in the provision of library services in response to the information needs of
library users.
 Respond to daily on-site requests for information.
 Train library users to effectively search the Library catalogue, Internet and
other electronic resources.
 Provide an interlibrary loan service for both book and audiovisual
materials and maintain records.
 Maintain records for the interlibrary loan service.
 Maintain circulation files, records and statistics.
4. Assist the Library Coordinator with Library Promotion



Promotes library materials through storytelling and book talks and other
programs.
Creates and maintains attractive bulletin boards, decorations and displays
Cooperatively delivers programming with Peace Library System Consulting
Staff; for example, coordinates book fairs, author tours, summer reading
programs, and other library-related promotional events.

 A certificate or diploma in library and information sciences or several years
related experience.
Knowledge:
 Knowledge of library policies, procedures, methods, ethics and professional
standards.
