“65 years have passed since the foundation and
book-equipping of our university library.
As Nicolae Iorga so meaningfully had said, we
were ingrained “the cold religion of the books” in our
veins.
The school years were the years of fertile reading,
of genuine bounds with the books, and the kneading of the
mind.
The transition from the traditional library to the
modern library is nothing else than the grafting of a
tradition on new scientific discoveries.
We should express our gratitude to the librarians who both elevated the books
establishment and the act of reading as well as to those who embrace this noble
profession nowadays.”
ARON POANTA
Rector of the University of Petrosani
“My first contact with the Library of the University of Petrosani
occurred as an employee, not as a reader. I am grateful
for the chance of having worked for a few years in a
place where I learnt to cherish not only the content of
the books, but also their material support, which is so
fragile. It seems hard to believe, but before 1990, only
a few libraries in the country could take pride in such a
rich and diverse book patrimony. You could find here
all sorts of books: technical books, exact sciences
books, philosophy books, linguistic books, history
books, fiction books as well as books belonging to a lot
of other fields; it seldom happened to look for a book
and not to be able to find it. Today, I can scarcely accept the idea that the authority of
the libraries is weakened by the multimedia techniques and that people come to this
‘temple’ of the books less frequently. Nonetheless, I am convinced that no real
intellectual can be educated outside its walls.
The cultural performance of the Internet will neither be able to replace this
storehouse of knowledge nor the atmosphere and emotion aroused by the direct
contact with the printed books reigning in their priceless home – THE LIBRARY. I
wish my soul library and its devoted librarians long life and faithful readers.”
Lecturer Adriana Koronka, Ph. D.
LYBRARY’S MISSION
The Library of the University of Petrosani offers wide access to information,
ideas, and reading; it encourages and supports the freedom of knowledge; it provides
and develops the required services, which attempt at matching the needs of its readers.
The library is subordinated to the University of Petrosani and supports the educational
and research activities, which are carried out at the University. The main goal of the
Library of the University of Petrosani is to serve its readers, all the library’s activities
being subordinated to this fundamental purpose.
A BRIEF HISTORY
Year 1948, when the
Coal Institute was established
at Petrosani, was also the moment of the library’s foundation. In the beginnings, the
library included a few book-shelves placed in a room of the former “Company of
Petrosani”, located in Mihai Eminescu Street. The modest stock, of only 3,500
volumes, came from donations and transfers from the Polytechnic libraries in
Bucharest and Timisoara. When the new educational establishment was built, the
library moved temporarily to the location, which later hosted the periodicals library.
In 1962, the library moved to the location designed for such a purpose, which
included storehouses, reading rooms, and adequate furniture. The main catalogues,
alphabetic and systematic, were also organized
Beginning with 1965, the library of the Mines Institute of Petrosani abandoned
the idea of being only a specialized library and started gathering encyclopaedic
collections.
In 1969, the fund of unique books was constituted, originally stored in the
former cinema room of the institute.
The first number of the quarterly publication entitled “Newsletter” appeared in
1971. During the same period, the annual publishing of “The Library’s Guide” also
began, while a bibliographical catalogue according to academic years was designed,
and an alphabetic index of the systematic catalogue was drawn out; they all
represented useful instruments for promptly, exactly, and explicitly informing all
readers.
On April 29th, 1999, a donated first computer, PC 486, entered the library.
Beginning with year 2000, the library moved its activity to the modern
building dedicated to it, which provided vast room for storage and reading. Its
relocation lasted until 2002.
The library has become an active participant in book fairs and salons since
2000, with a view to promoting the higher education in the academic centre of
Petrosani.
On December 12th, 2001, the library was connected to the Internet.
The first bibliographical entry in the electronic catalogue was made on April
11th, 2005, the application involved being the result of the University’s computer
scientists: Raul BOB and Andi KOVACI.
Beginning with September 21st, 2007, the electronic catalogue became
available on Internet.
Between September 7th and September 9th, 2005, the sixteenth edition of ABIR
National Conference took place.
Owing to the purchasing of 20 computers, in April 2008, the library’s network
came to include 35 computers.
The library has had its Facebook account since April 4th, 2012.

ORGANIZATION
The Library of the University of Petrosani has a simple structure, conceived as
a entirety. Each librarian “meets”, at least once, with the book, along the processing
flow: acquisition – evidence – cataloguing – indexing, and with the reader, owing to
the loaning activities. This type of organization provides efficiency and flexibility,
mitigating the difference between the technical services of the library and those
offered to the public.
The library’s staff includes six persons:
Luminita DANCIU– Chief Librarian
Georgeta BONCIA- periodicals and international exchange
Adina IANC-CUZA - cataloguing – indexing
Iuliana KASZONI- relationships with readers
Octavia STANCIOIU - internal exchanges of publications and inter-libraries loans
Luminita PASARE - publications evidence

ACTIVITIES
The library carries on the following types of activities: collections
development, collections evidence and organizing, collections preservation and
conservation, collections cataloguing and indexation, communication of collections
and public relations, documentary information and bibliography references,
computerization, cultural activities, and cooperation activities with similar institutions.

DOCUMENTARY PATRIMONY
The Library of the University of Petrosani, through its unique patrimony of
books, represents a national information and cognition centre, specialized in the
mining field, where our University has developed the richest and longest tradition.
During its evolution, beginning as a library serving a single specialization and
subsequently emerging towards an academic library, The Library of the University

The publications acquired from donations and exchanges have also contributed
to the raising of the collections, the library having established exchanges with over 60
institutions from Romania and abroad.
Owing to the national and international exchange of publications, The Library
of the University of Petrosani manages to obtain books that cannot be found in its
patrimony or that cannot be acquired from other sources: purchasing, donations or
transfers.
The library establishes, maintains and develops exchange relationships with
similar national and international institutions, while promoting and disseminating the
works published by the University of Petrosani.
It enriches its collections through developing a powerful exchange of
publications, through meeting the needs of the users from various academic centres, in
Romania and abroad, who are interested in documentary resources.
