Student Government Association Meeting Minutes October 14th, 2015 Come to order at 4:30pm Attendance: 39 Voting Members in Attendance: 34 Quorum: Yes Approval of last meetings minutes: Motion to approve last week’s minutes by Robert Gomez and seconded by Emily Baker. Motion Passed. Guests: Dr. Jack Rose, Mayor for City of Murray: Let me introduce a few people. Jordan Smith has been our contact person. I started out teaching at Murray State University. I am also a native to Murray. We are trying to increase the amount of students who visit downtown Murray. A few ideas include providing transportation to downtown Murray, keeping the stores open later throughout the week, bring back “Squealing at the Square,” and build a park/place for students to take pictures and hang out. Regarding the three options for the renovation of 16th Street, our main concern is student safety. Mrs. Linda Cherry, City Councilwoman: We do value our students! We do want your parents to know that your stay here is safe. Your safety and welfare is a top priority. We value your opinions over parking and what happens here in Murray. Do not assume that all drivers are looking out for your safety. Please look both ways and possibly make eye contact with the driver before stepping out into the street. Be alert before you cross the street. Mrs. Jane Shoemaker, City Councilwoman: I will leave my card here. If you have any questions or comments about what we talk about today, feel free to contact me! I am very excited to talk to you and get to know you! I am a graduate from Murray. We love Murray, we love the university, and we love the Racers. We have an active interest in you staying here in Murray. Drivers are required to yield to pedestrians; they are not required to stop for pedestrians. Dr. Davies, President of Murray State University: I have never in 17 years had a Mayor or City Council members attend a Student Government meeting. SGA did an amazing job at Homecoming this weekend. The parade, Tent City, and the game were phenomenal! The Alumni appreciated their welcome back to Murray. Student Government Association Meeting Minutes October 14th, 2015 Dr. Renee Fister, Senior Presidential Advisor for Strategic Initiatives: If we meet these initiatives, there is money that will come back to the university and affect the future students. We would be willing to hold a forum to inform the students of the initiatives that are in place. Every undergraduate student has an opportunity to participate in service learning, clinical, internship or study abroad program before they graduate to better prepare you for after you graduate.
