Glacier View Parent Advisory Committee Meeting – November 19, 2014 Minutes Members Present: as noted by √ Chairperson: Members At Large Secretary: Annette Fielden Keith Russell √ Paul Bozenich Becci Russell √ Diana Anderson Rob Fielden √ Susan Simson √ Dee Sugden √ Also Present: Murray McRae (Principal) √ Approval of Minutes – Oct 15, 2014 Motion: Seconder: CARRIED Steve Galbraith √ BRING FORWARD Additions to Agenda Principal's Report: Murray McRae The election for chairperson and treasurer is scheduled for the next PAC meeting. Dee Sugden has put her name forward to be on the executive (cheers all around). Murray says the shop program is off and running. So far the program has not been widely accepted. The shop program has started out with some art and the construction of sawhorses and pallet chairs (after the meeting Murray gave the PAC a tour of the shop and the projects). Dave, the shop teacher, is buying materials for working with stained glass. A former teacher casually talking to Murray volunteered to help with the stained glass. Dee has donated a go-cart for the shop program. A few of the kids are enthusiastic about the gocarts. After the go-carts are up and running Murray suggested that the parking lot could be blocked off for some trials. The school is looking at teaching some students math through the shop program by showing the practical applications of math. Some large projects are planned that will have to be built on the pad outside the shop. Murray got an estimate of $4000 to enclose the area with a chain link fence to protect the projects from vandalism. Funding would be split between the district and the school. Murray figured the schools portion could come from $1000 from the bus fund ( approved by the secretary treasurer) $500 from NIDES, and $500 from the school account. NIDES then generously volunteered $1500 so Murray plans on taking the rest ($500) from the bus account. On Friday there will be a program put on by NIDES for training students for work in the oil patch called the PATCH program. This program will teach interested students things like WHIMIS, fall arrest, ladder safety and first aid. Another program will involve the construction of 14' X 20' model homes for for the demonstration of electrical wiring and plumbing etc. Friday is the end of term 1. Automated messages will be sent out to parents and guardians with a notification about report cards on November 24 and parent teacher interviews on November 27. Students will not be attending school on November 27. EDES is a program to collect and distribute items like scarves, socks, cookies and toothbrushes to people that live on the street. On Saturday November 29 students will be recruited to solicit donations from neighbours in some of the subdivisions in town. On December 4 ArtStarts in Schools will teach the students Capoeira. Capoeira involves an intense workout in dance and acrobatics.. Murray will send out a notice about a December 10 lock down drill. The drill involves practising what students and teachers are to do if someone comes into the school that intends to do harm. Classroom doors have latches so they can be secured by the teacher from the inside so an intruder can't come into a classroom full of students. The classroom occupants will move to areas in the classroom where they can't be seen by the intruder. Murray will walk around the school during the drill to make sure all the doors are secure and that he can see nobody. The students have to be emotionally prepared in advance because the exercise could be traumatic for some. Connections students visited the grade three class at Puntledge Elementary School. The students accompanied the grade three class to work on art. The Connection students were well behaved and well received. Treasury- The PAC account has a balance of $2400 because of the gaming grant. Correspondence Received- Royal Bank Statement with a $2400 balance. -BCCPAC planner. -Recycling notice Old Business- There was a discussion about proceeding with the Constitution and Bylaws in the coming months. Mickey had started a draft. There was a discussion of the goals of the PAC. PAC will decide how to spend money in the PAC account. One of the main goals is for the PAC to stay alive. New Business- Steve suggested that we bring forth ideas for fund raising and ways to distribute funds. Dee suggested some fund raising activities such as popcorn days and selling hot chocolate at lunch. Murray is interested in the funding of a water fountain and a school sign. If something is decided on it could take time for implementation because of a back log by district maintenance workers. There was a discussion about a school mascot and the school identity. The school colour is purple. Five arrows in the school symbol symbolize the five schools in the district pointing at Glacier View. Next Meeting Date: December 17, 2014 7:00 pm Adjournment- 20:11
