Discussion Steps for BASA Meetings
1. Explain the Process for this Meeting
 Mid-year progress check; not a summative evaluation
 A coaching, feedback (to the evaluator), and learning conversation
 Review the Self-Assessment compared the to evaluator’s assessment
 Set aside areas of agreement to focus on areas of mutual interest and need for
additional information
2. Review Areas of Agreement
 Revisit the indicators within the BASA
 Restate the evaluation rating for the indicators in which you and the Principal and/or
Assistant Principal agree on that specific rating
3. Identify Areas of Focus (need for additional information) During the Conversation
 Identify the indicators in which the person being evaluated believes there has been a
change in performance rating subsequent to the person’s initial self-assessment
 Evaluator identifies BASA Indicators in which s/he believes requires additional
information (rubric-based evidence)
4. Focused Conversation
 Evaluator listens to the person being evaluated talk about the areas of focus and rubricbased impact data they believe supports their self-assessment
 Evaluator listens for exemplars of impact evidence as well as faulty thinking and
misunderstanding on the part of the person being evaluated and when appropriate
validates the exemplars and corrects misunderstanding
 Facilitate the conversation around next steps
5. Review Deliberate Practice
 Examine each of the five components
 Compare the construction of the plan’s components to the Deliberate Practice
“Development” Rubric
 Make suggested changes so that the Deliberate Practice Plan meets and/or exceeds
proficiency
6. Next Steps of Support
 Evaluator listens to the person being evaluated talk about support needed to move to
higher professional performance
 Evaluator asks the person being evaluated how the mid-year conversation has helped
them think about their leadership performance
