Comprehensive Assessment of Spoken Language (CASL)
The CASL provides an in-depth evaluation of, 1) the oral language processing of systems of auditory comprehension, oral expression
and word retrieval, 2) the knowledge and use of words and grammatical structures of language, 3) the ability to use language for
special tasks requiring higher-level cognitive functions, and 4) the knowledge and use of language in communicative contexts.
Standard Score
Comprehension of Basic Concepts: Auditory comprehension of words that refer
to basic perceptual and conceptual relations.
Antonyms: Word knowledge, retrieval, and oral expression in a linguistically
decontextualized environment.
Synonyms: Knowledge of the meaning of spoken words in linguistically
decontextualized environment.
Sentence Completion: Word knowledge, retrieval, and oral expression in linguistic
context.
Idiomatic Language: Knowledge, retrieval, and oral expression of idioms.
Syntax Construction: Oral expression of words, phrases, and sentences using a
variety of morphosyntactic rules.
Paragraph Comprehension of Syntax: Auditory comprehension of syntax in
spoken narratives.
Grammatical Morphemes: Metalinguistic knowledge and use of the form and
meaning of grammatical morphemes.
Sentence Comprehension of Syntax: Auditory recognition of whether sentence
pairs with different surface structures has the same or different meaning.
Grammatically Judgment: Judgment of and ability to correct the grammar of
sentences.
Nonliteral Language: Understanding the meaning of spoken messages
independent of the literal interpretation of the surface structure.
Meaning from Context: Derivation of the meaning of words from their oral
linguistic context.
Inference: Use of previously acquired world knowledge to derive meaning from
inferences in spoken language.
Ambiguous Sentences: Auditory comprehension of words, phrases, and
sentences that have more than one meaning.
Pragmatic Judgment: Knowledge and use of pragmatic language rules and
judgment of their appropriate application.
