Pittsburg State University Classified Senate Minutes for August 14, 2013 Next Meeting: Wednesday, September 11, 2013 Location: Inaugural Room of the Overman Student Center 1:30 pm The Classified Senate welcomes all classified employees; you do not have to be a Senator to attend. Welcome guests: Phillip Deierling Senators Present: Tim Anderson, John Bartels, Terri Blessent, Bryna Broyles, Heather Busch, Barbara Circle, Dacia Clark, Wylie DeGruson, Betty Geier, Dina Gladson, Donna Jacobs, Karen LaSota, Woody Lopez, Tracey Mussa, Sara Peak, Shari Saia, Josh Tucker, and Stephanie Willis Senators Absent: Mike McLane (excused), Steve Hall, and Janet Miller (excused) Agenda 1. Opening of Meeting Meeting called to order by Senate President, Dacia Clark at 1:30 PM. 2. Review of Meeting Minutes The minutes for July 10, 2013, were reviewed. No revision or corrections were noted or made. The minutes were accepted after a motion for approval was made, seconded, and passed. 3. Treasurer’s Report The Classified Senate Operating Budget had a beginning balance of $2,500.00 on July 29, 2013. There were no July expenses. The current ending balance is $2,500.00. The donation account had a beginning balance of $34.98. There was $0.02 accrued in interest, so the ending balance is $35.00. A motion was made for acceptance of the treasurer’s report, seconded, and passed. 4. Senate President’s report with University President: President, Dacia Clark, met with PSU President, Dr. Scott this past Monday. They discussed the Opening Faculty Meeting for tomorrow, August 15, 2013. Dacia and Tim will appear and represent the University Support Staff Study Group. Dr. Scott discussed adopting the Tobacco Policy but had some processes that we have to work through first. Pittsburg State University’s Strategic Plan runs out in 2015 and Dr. Scott and his team of planners will be re-evaluating a new strategic plan. He also discussed reviewing the partnership that PSU has with Ft. Scott Community College. 5. Committee Reports A. Election Committee: Dacia noted that we have a full Senate currently. B. Welcoming Committee: Tracey Mussa reported the new Classified Employees as: - Jeffrey Peternell: Custodial and General Services - Seana McKinstry: University Police & Parking Services - Joseph Polhlopek: Research Technology - John Stover: Custodial and General Services - Crickett Moore: Teacher Education C. Parking Committee: - No report. D. Diversity Committee – No report. E. Animal Use and Care Committee – No report. F. Tobacco Initiative: - No report. G. Legislative Update - Shawn Naccarato was not present so no report. 6. Old Business: Dacia informed everyone that the money that had been remaining in our General Account was not carried over. If we request sooner next year we might be able to keep it. 7. New Business: Sara Peak resigned as Secretary. She is pursuing her MBA and one of her classes meets within the last half hour of Senate Meetings. She believes that with only being in attendance for the first 10-15 minutes of meetings, she will be unable to perform her duties to their fullest. Nominations were opened to elect a new Secretary. Terri Blessent was nominated. She declined the nomination. Dina Gladson was nominated. She declined the nomination. Bryna Broyles was nominated. She declined the nomination. Heather Busch was nominated. She accepted the nomination. A motion was presented and seconded to elect Heather Busch as the new Secretary. Heather Busch was voted by an overwhelming majority to become the 2013-2014 Classified Senate Secretary. President, Dacia Clark, began filling committees. She described the various committees and their responsibilities with several people volunteering to serve on them. The 2013-2014 Committees and their representatives are: - Election Committee: Heather Busch & Barbara Circle Welcoming Committee: Karen Lasota Parking Committee: Phillip Deierling Diversity Committee: Dacia Clark - Animal Use & Care Committee: Stephanie Willis Position Paper Committee: Dacia Clark, Barbara Circle, Josh Tucker, Janet Miller, and Dina Gladson By-Laws Committee: Dacia Clark, Barbara Circle, Tracey Mussa, Josh Tucker, and Tim Anderson Public Relations: Bryna Broyles & Woody Lopez Legislative Committee: Shawn Naccarato 8. Good of the Order: Josh Tucker read an article he found regarding Missouri losing out due to tax changes that Kansas has made that have brought more jobs to Kansas. Donna Jacobs asked a question regarding Veterans’ Preference for Hiring as she read on the USSSG website. Dacia Clark encouraged the Senate to attend the Classified Employee Opening Meeting will be August 29, 2013 at 2:30-3:30pm in Grubbs Hall, Room 107.
