Creating Strong Writers with the
6+1 Trait Writing Framework
With Kathleen Hudson and Madeleine Bystrom
Saturday, September 28, 2013 (8:00 - 4:00)
Sunday, September 29, 2013 (8:00 – 3:00)
Workshop Description:
In this workshop we will look at defining characteristics of “good” writing and how that helps us
as educators to provide descriptive feedback to our students so that they learn to become
strong independent writers. The workshop will introduce each trait and weave in interactive
activities that you will be able to apply to your own classroom situations.
Participants will:

Get to know and understand 6 traits of writing that help to define good writing.

Develop a common language amongst teachers and students to discuss writing.

Practice some activities that assist in teaching these “traits”.

Engage collaboratively in moderating writing using the 6 traits rubrics as diagnostic tools.

6 traits trainer certified by Education Northwest
Kat Hudson is primarily a science educator, she also has extensive
teaching experiences in social studies, language arts, and drama at the upper
elementary and MS levels. In order to facilitate her teaching process, she creates
an environment that surrounds her students with live plants and animals,
intriguing scientific research, thought-provoking current events and hands-on
manipulatives. Math and science are easily integrated together, but she also
emphasizes the importance of communications skills in the field of science, as
this is “the nature of science”. Writing and presentation skills are important areas
of development for her "budding scientists" and 6 + 1 Traits practice helps direct
her teaching and encourages her to create collaborative relationships with her
colleagues.
