INTENSIVE ENGLISH LITERACY WRITING
(IE Pre-Secondary 11-year-old-Secondary)
ESSENTIAL UNIT 24 (E24)
(Grammar)
(July 2014)
Unit Statement: In this unit the student will demonstrate command of the conventions,
usage and mechanics of Standard English grammar when writing or speaking and
demonstration. This unit will run simultaneously with the other units. This unit will lean
heavily on the writing modes such as narrative, expository, persuasive, and research for the
level of mastery.
This unit is designed to be engaged by the student throughout the whole year. The unit
will be considered a 1 or 2 periods per week class that can be spread over five days in
mini lessons. One period per week should be entered into the PBE program.
Essential Outcomes: (must be assessed for mastery)
1. The Student Will illustrate the use of the mechanics of writing (punctuation and
capitalization)
2. TSW illustrate rules of grammar usage. (basic sentence parts, nouns, pronouns, verbs,
adjectives, adverbs, prepositions, phrases, clauses, conjunctions, interjections,
and effective sentences)
3. TSW reflect on grammar usage within the modes of writing.
Practiced/ Ongoing Skills:
1. The Student Will engage technology, including the internet, to produce and publish
writing and to interact and collaborate with others, such as peer editing and
conferencing, within one or more essays.
2. TSW write routinely over extended time frames for a range of discipline-specific
task, purposes and audiences.
3. TSW use a thesaurus, dictionary or other source to improve personal vocabulary
during the editing portion of The Writing Process.
4. TSW identify and correct any spelling errors discovered during the proofreading
portion of The Writing Process.

activities and grades, and more. Automated paragraph and essay grading requires that
students engage specific writing prompts.
