Burnaby Community Adult Literacy Program – (B CALP)
Burnaby Neighbourhood House, Community Adult Literacy Program (CALP): Free
program for English speakers who can work with a trained volunteer tutor, weekly for
one on one support to improve basic Reading/Writing/Numeracy skills. Learners can
work on their personal goals and have the flexibility to meet their tutor at a day/time time
or location that works best for both of them.

Community and Continuing Education, Burnaby School District
Literacy Foundations courses in English, Mathematics, Socials and Computer
studies to develop knowledge and skills in these areas, and /or to upgrade basic skills to
be successful in coursework at grades 10, 11, & 12.
Literacy Foundations courses are open to Canadian Citizens, Permanent Residents and
Convention Refugees and are tuition-free for most students.

High school Completion courses for students who wish to complete either the 80
credit 2004 graduation program or the Adult Graduation program. High School

The I-CARE Program offers:

Frontier College operates a variety of literacy programs in locations across Canada. We
recruit and train volunteers to work with children, youth and adults in a great array of
settings. We also help other community-based organizations set up and run literacy
programs for their own participants. In Burnaby, our tutors volunteer with the Newcomer
Women’s English Language Support Group and the PIE Plus Program at Edmonds
Community School.

CCE offers ELSA (English Language Services for Adults) for newcomers to Canada.
ELSA is the starting point for students whose first language is not English. ELSA is
open to Permanent Residents or Convention Refugees who are 17 years or older.
CCE offers a wide variety of high school completion courses for students who wish to

ESL for Beginners: . South Burnaby NeighbourhoodHouse A free program for adults
who do not fit into ELSA or paid ESL programs. No registration is required. Learners
drop in most times as per their flexibility. Though classes are mostly conversational they
are planned in a way that they support students with survival language for settlement in
BC. Classes are held Mondays and Thursdays from 1:00- 3:00 pm. South Burnaby
NeighbourhoodHouse.
